The controversial proposal to turn 26 miles of abandoned railroad into a trail for biking, hiking, and horseback riding has some residents fired up.

About 40 residents and folks who live outside the area packed into Craig County High School tonight to voice their concerns about this plan.
Many say they don't want the trail because it will bring strangers onto their property and may endanger livestock that graze along the old railroad.

"I too want to avoid any personal attacks. I promise not to bring up your singing." Lieberman: Well, I promise not to sing (laughter)."

But the exchanges quickly turned serious -- with both sides pointing out the differences in spending priorities -- on social security, on medicare, on tax cut proposals -- with each side claiming the others' ideas were based on faulty numbers.
(SOT/SEN. JOE LIEBERMAN/D-VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE)

"The number of 500 million Americans not benefiting from our tax cut program is absolutely wrong. It's an estimate done on an earlier form of our tax cut program, and it's just plain wrong."
(SOT/DICK CHENEY)

'Bernie, you have to be a CPA to understand what he just said. The fact is the plan is so complex that an ordinary American's never going to be able to figure out what they even qualify for."

Both were encouraged yet concerned about the violence in Yugoslavia in the wake of President Slobodan Milosevic's refusal to step down -- but they differed on the use of the the US military as peacekeepers, and the morale of the US military.

'The American military is the best-trained, best-equipped, most powerful force in the world, and that Al Gore and I will do whatever it takes to keep them that way.

"Now, with all due respect Joe, this administration has a bad track record in this regard, and it's available for anybody who wants to look at the record and wants to talk to our men and women in uniform."
(NARR:)

There was talk of abortion -- gas prices -- education -- the environment -- even what to do about Saddam Hussein -- the only time it got personal was near the end-- when cheney --prodded by an question-- criticized the conneticut senator for softening his stance for violence in the media-- saying he liked the old joe lieberman better than the new.

The plan is to close it, along with station three on Sixth Street, Southwest, a block below the Jefferson Center.
The two downtown stations would be replaced by a new one in the vicinity of Jefferson and Elm.
It would also house the Fire Administration offices.
Chief Jim Grigsby has already informed members of his department of the changes. He plans to start briefing members of City Council next week.
In the Northwest sector of the city, station Five on 12th Street, Northwest would close, along with Station Nine at 24th and Melrose. Here again these two stations would be eliminated, but replaced by a new fire house somewhere in the vicinity of 19th and Orange. The chief has said he has a site in mind but that additional property would have to be acquired.
Station 12 on Salem Turnpike would be closed, replaced by the new fire house that just opened this year on Peters Creek Road.
Chief Grigsby was unavailable today, but Battalion Chief Audie Ferris said the station closings would save the city 800-thousand dollars in maintenance costs.
