Good evening folks and welcome to the 7th week of high school football action here on Friday Football Extra. Before we sign off tonight we will bring you the highlights of 13 games from Wythe County to Pittsylvania County.
[GRAPHIC=PULASKI/FRANKLIN]

The Big Chill is forecast for the weekend, but it got frosty in Rocky Mount this evening a few hours before the cold front made its way through the area. The unbeaten Pulaski County Cougars, who have played a murderous scheduled to this point rolled into Cy Dillon Stadium this evening for their 5th road game of the year.

[SUPER=51-Rocky Mount/Pulaski Co. vs. Franklin Co.]

The Eagles celebrate senior night as brothers Chris and Jason Rizzuto present their parents with flowers and a kiss before the kickoff. But the action was all Cougars. On their first possession from their own 35, Alan Wheeling hands off to Frank Cobbs - who goes right up the middle. He's got nothing but daylight and green grass in front of him. 7-to-0 on the 65 yard TD dash. With four minutes left in the first, from the Eagles' 7, Wheeling drops back and lobs one to a wide open Jeff King. It's now 14-to-nothing. Pulaski would score again before Franklin County would get on the board in the second quarter. Daniel Bowles finds Devon Taylor open on the right side. The 28 yard play makes it 14-to-6 after the blocked extra point. Still in the second, the Cougars have the ball on the three. Wheeling gives it to Josh Calfee. He fights over the line to make it 28-to-6 Pulaski. Late in the third, the Cougars from their own 37 let Cobbs do his thing. He takes off on the trap play and bounces into the open. No one in the stadium can catch him. It's a 68 yard touchdown dash and the Cougars are now in front 42-to-6. Late in the fourth quarter, the Eagles would get pushed back to their 2 yard line. Bill Farlow gets in and blocks the punt.

Time now to head to Daleville for what many folks considered the most intriguing game of the night - Salem versus Lord Botetourt. Last year the Cavs run and shoot offense shot itself to pieces losing to Salem at the Stadium 62-to-nothing. But this season - Salem hasn't exactly been the Salem of old, and remember what Cave Spring's Jacob Lewis did to the Spartans' secondary on September 22nd.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Daleville/Salem vs. Lord Botetourt; :00]

Lewis threw for a school record - could the versatile Anthony Ford do the same tonight? These shirtless fans thought so. With the score tied at 7-all late in the third, Salem is in need of a huge play. And they will get one as Rico Jordan takes the pitch on 3rd and 8 from the 22. He breaks free up the left sideline to the Botetourt 28 yard line. But the Salem drive would come up empty. Early in the fourth, Salem would get another chance. The Cavs have the ball on their own 42. Anthony Ford tries to hit the quick slant, but it's picked off by Kevin Schwizer at midfield. But Salem could not cash in. Late in the game with the score still tied at 7-all, the Cavs will make their final move. On a second and 8 from the Salem 30, Ford out of the shotgun keeps up the middle for a first down inside the 20 yard line. That would set up the eventual game winner. Jared White had missed two field goals earlier in the game but with 1:02 to play - he nails the 35 yard kick.

The most impressive team in the first half of the season as far as the Blue Ridge district is concerned, has been Northside. Tonight the Vikings looked to remain prefect in district play and stay on a collision course with Salem. This evening the Vikes were in Vinton taking on the reeling Terriers.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Vinton/Northside vs. William Byrd; :00]

A large number of Roanoke County residents invaded Bob Patterson stadium for this one tonight. With 5:37 left in the first quarter Northside will turn the game over to superstar Tommy Morgan. He fields the punt and runs all over the place - eventually across the goal line and into the endzone. Morgan makes a mockery of the coverage and gets some good blocking as well to put Northside on top 7-to-0. Late in the second, again on the move, Morgan will pitch on the option to Cory Keeling - who scores from the six. It's now 14-to-6 and the rout may be on. Byrd would look for the rally on the ensuing kickoff as Kenny Bowen takes it on his 20, rockets through a hole on the right side and sets the plate for the Terriers' offense in Northside territory. But the Vikings' "D" would shut them down. The Terriers got one more shot at the endzone before halftime. From the Vikings' 37 - T.J. Rigsby passes to Cory Bush for a 21 yard gain down to the 16 yard line.
[SUPER=52-Northside/21/William Byrd/0;]

But Northside's defense would again stand tall as the Vikings win it tonight 21 to 0.

The quiet member of the Blue Ridge upper echelon of teams, the Alleghany Mountaineers, came into tonight hoping to stay unbeaten in district play. The Mounties whipped both Christiansburg and Rockbridge the past two weeks.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Blacksburg/Alleghany vs. Blacksburg; :00]

Tonight, the Mounties took on Blacksburg - a team that almost had Salem's number last Friday. The Indians led 17-to-nothing at halftime and then watched Alleghany fill the air with footballsDwayne Washington hooks up with Terrell Givens on the 66 yard touchdown completion that would begin a second half track meet. Blacksburg comes back with an 8 play drive. Brett Smith completes it from seven yards out with the run. It's now 24-to-7 Blacksburg. Alleghany would score once again and cut the lead to 10. But Blacksburg was up to the challenge as Smith scores again from the four. The Indians expand the advantage to 31-to-14. Alleghany would make another dent in the score.
[SUPER=52-Alleghany/21/Blacksburg/31;]

CW Clemmons caps a five play drive. But it's not enough as the Indians get the 31-to-21 win.

The Red Devils not only wanted to stay perfect tonight but they wanted to make this a pleasant homecoming. As expected the defenses dominated this game. Amherst would try to move with Kionne Dixon taking the ball on the sweep, but he to is swept off of his feed as Chris Thompson throws him for a five yard loss. Late in the second quarter - Rustburg would attempt to move the ball again. But Derrick Crabtree fumbles the exchange and Amherst recovers at midfield.

It's 20-to-nothing. After picking off a Cougar pass, Deon Moore will give the Warriors even more to cheer about as he adds another tally from 14 yards out. The score is now 27-to-nothing. The Magna Vista defense would continue to cause all kinds of problems for the Cougars as Louis Taylor picks off the pass and takes it to the house on the 20 yard return.

It was a cold night in Wytheville - but in the second half the action was anything but as GW had a 10-to-7 lead heading to the third quarter. The Rebels hand the Maroons a two point gift early in the second half as this snap sails over the head of punter Daniel Preston and out of the endzone for the safety. It's 12-to-7. PH Glade Spring would hang in this one though, and in the fourth quarter the Rebels would take the lead on a Chris Barnes TD run. It's now a 13-to-12 game in favor of PH. However, on their next drive, the Maroons' Charlie Clark would hook up with Jeremy Hagee on this 34 yard pass play. It moves the ball all the way down to the 12 yard line.

But the Bobcats would surprise more than a few folks by answering right back. Jason Dunbar gets the final five for the score and it's 7-to-6 Giles after the missed extra point. The Radford special teams then took care of business on their own. They get the blocked punt. Remember Frank Beamer used to be an assistant at Radford high in the early 70's.
