The starting salary for a teacher in Bedford County is 26-thousand dollars - that's at least 5-thousand dollars less a year than a first year teacher makes in Roanoke County. As a result Bedford County has lost 50 percent of its teaching staff over the last 3 years.

Right now both suspects have been served with arrest warrants for first degree murder in Floyd County.

Firefighters rescued the man who was then taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Mercer was also awarded one- dollar in compensatory damages.
