Good evening folks and thanks in advance for joining News 7 Sports for tonight's edition of Friday Football Extra. This is week number nine of the regular season and before we are finished this evening we'll check the highlights from 14 different games and also check in with the Hokies at Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
[GRAPHIC=LIBERTY/AMHERST]

We begin tonight with the Seminole front runners, the Liberty Minutemen - who tonight looked to improve their district mark to 5-and-0. Tonight, Scott Abell's team was in Amherst trying to shoot down the Lancers.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Amherst/Liberty vs. Amherst Co.; :00]

But Mickey Crouch's team had some different ideas as they took the field tonight ready to rip into the Minutemen..
First quarter action, Lancers forced to punt and the snap will sail over Noach Crouch's head and out the back of the end zone for a safety.. 2- zip Liberty early on..
Lancers would get back on track though.. Chris Williams drops back to pass and sails one out to Brian McPherson.. the leaping catch is good for a 30- yard gain deep into Minuteman territory..
A couple of plays later and it's Williams, the quarterback keeper up the middle for a 3- yard score and Amherst is on top 7- to- 2.
Liberty would answer.. the ball on the Lancer 30 and that's the big man, number 40 Chase Andrews bouncing off guys all the way into the end zone.. the two-point conversion would put Liberty back on top 10-7..
Amherst comes right back.. the shovel pass from Williams to McPherson and he's gone.. 53 yards before they pull him down at the 11- yard line.. he'd score a few plays later to make it 14-10 Lancers.. the fans were smelling an upset..
[SUPER=52-Liberty/20/Amherst Co./17;]

Just before the half, after a Liberty fumble, Noah Crouch would knock down a 38- yard field goal to make it 17- to 10 going into the break. But Liberty manages to come back and win it 20 to 17.

It's time now to check in on what most folks in the Roanoke Valley and beyond considered the marquee game of the night - Salem at Northside. The Vikings came in tonight with the better record, the better personnel, and the better chance of winning. But Salem arrived on Peters Creek Road in no mood to relinquich its Blue Ridge crown. Roy Stanley has more on Northside attempt to beat Salem for the first time since 1993.

Homecoming at Lord Botetourt followed the induction of the second class of hall of famers into the school's hall - including former Friday Football Extra great Elton Tolliver!! Christiansburg would have the first opportunity to score tonight as Matt Woodyard hits Michael Creasy in the endzone for an apparent TD. But an illegal formation penalty calls it back and the Burg comes up empty. The Cavs would then get on the move. Anthony Ford runs up the middle on the keeper and then right at you. He eventually is stopped at the Christiansburg 42 yard line after a nice pickup. The Cavs would then face a second and one from the 20. Austin Bousman takes the Ford pass in on the right side to put Botetourt

The front runners in the Piedmont district, the Magna Vista Warriors, were in Bassett tonight looking to make quick work of the winless Bengals and all avoid a letdown from last week's emotional win over Tunstall.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Bassett/Magna Vista vs. Bassett; :00]

Coach Joe Beckelheimer made sure that there would not be a letdown for the Trojans in their pursuit of bagging a Bengal. The Warriors Deon Moore gets things started by intercepting this Cedric Watkins' pass. He makes the pick and returns it to the 25 yard line. Magna Vista would then let John Lieteau takes care of business with a bruising blast of the middle that eventually covers 75 yards. The Warriors start to crank up their offensive machine as they take a 7-to-nothing lead. The Warriors would score at will with Lieteau doing even more damage on this TD dash. Magna Vista eventually went on top 20-to-nothing before - Cesar Tatum would counter that with a nice run of his own as he scores late in the second.
[SUPER=52-Magna Vista/61/Bassett/23;]

But the Warriors stay perfect in the Piedmont with a 61 to 23 win over Bassett.

The Cavaliers had some work to do as they came out in the second half trailing 28-to-nothing. The Cavs would let John Parker junior take this pitch off the right side. He will turn the corner and then turn on the jets. It's a 79 yard scoring play and Fieldale cuts the lead to 28-to-6. They then go for two, and Parker gets in off the right side to make it 28-to-8. On the ensuing kickoff, Rontate martin bobbles the ball, but Byron Logan will pick it up, bust a move of the right side

Jermaine Myers would score in the third to push the Patriots' advantage to 28-to-10. Franklin County would attempt to come back and tighten things up even more. Daniel Bowles pass is picked off by Maurice Robinson at the PH two yard line and then falls out of bounds. PH would add another tally as Robinson passes to Tremayne Johnson over the middle. Steve Ragsdale had to like his chances as the second half began with this one all tied up at 8-a piece. After a back and forth third quarter, Giles looked as though it was taking over as Conney Ratcliffe blasts down the right side and scores on the 93 yard touchdown run to put Giles on top 14-to-8. But a holding penalty wiped out the score and changed the momentum, as well. Giles would then fumble and the Colonels would capitalize with Demetrius Grant going into the endzone to make it a 15-to-8 game in favor of the Colonels. The Colonels would get 7 more on their next possession, with Grant again making it into the zone. It's now 22-to-8. Fleming would just wear down the Spartans.

Chivalry isn't dead in Radford, but common sense apparently is as this guy in shorts gives up the blanket and freezes in his shorts. But Radford would fumble it back and Glenvar would make the Cats pay as Anthony Hackett runs it in for his third TD of the night to make it 32-to-13 Glenvar on top and in control. Then later in the fourth, Hackett will top off his night and cap the Highlander win by taking the snap and weaving his way into the end zone.

It's 7-to-nothing after a quarter. Boyd and Peerman would continue to make waves in the air as they connect this time for a sweet 23 yard pickup into Hawks' territory. This time it's Boyd with the pass to Dominic Yuille (you-ELL). This connection is good for another touchdown. And it's 14-to-nothing with 7:45 to go before the half. ((18 carriers, 149 yards and two touchdowns, stats John Lieteau has been putting up most of the season. In fact his 135 rushing attempts for 979 yards through eight weeks translates into over seven yards a carry. ((:))
But perhaps the seniors greatest assets are his versatility and indurance, in fact his list of responsibilities seem to keep growing and growing. ((:)) ((:)) ((:))
Saying Lietaeu has a motor that never stops isn't just lip service. The outside linebacker leads the team in tackles and is dangerous to throw at. His passion for the game and body structure reminds his coach of a former Staunton River player now making waves for the second ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. ((:)) Lieteau says he intends to play in college and will probably start at Community College next season. Steve Mason Friday Football Extra. ))
