The town of Iron Gate may soon become part of Alleghany County.
Iron Gate's mayor says the D-E-Q is to blame.
Jennifer Miele is in our newsroom tonight with the story.
[DOUBLE BOXES=Teresa & Jen/Newsroom;]
Teresa, Iron Gate's former mayor and town council initiated the plan that would make Iron Gate part of Alleghany County.
But the town's new mayor and council are fighting to stop the referendum.

(( At the age of 20, Chris Fisher is Iron Gate's youngest councilman. He's not up for re-election, but Novemeber 7th could still be his last day in office.
The D-E-Q says Iron Gate must begin pumping sewage into Alleghany County by 2004. The county wants one and a half million dollars for that service. If the town's 450 residents don't want to pay, they'll have to turn their city over to Alleghany County.

Alleghany County has made no provisions to upkeep public grounds.

Iron Gate borrowed nearly 800 thousand dollars in 1991 to build a new sewage plant. Former council members felt another loan to pump sewage into a new plant was too risky. Now it's the voters of Iron Gate who will decide if their town is worth one point five million dollars.

[LIVE= Jen Full /Newsroom]
If Iron Gate does become part of Alleghany County, the county will assume the town's debt AND residents will pay one local tax instead of two.
[DOUBLE BOXES=Teresa & Jen /Newsroom;]
But, Teresa, Iron Gate will still have to pay to keep its street lights on and its parks in tact.
[QUESTION - Theresa]
Isn't something similar happening to Clifton Forge?
[ANSWER - Jen]
Acutally, yes, in the spring, Clifton Forge residents will decide if there home will reveret from a city to a town. Alleghany County has agreeded to take on its financial burdens if they do become a town.
