You know you can count on traffic being backed up when it's race day at the Martinsville Speedway.
But now the race track is trying to alleviate some of those headaches by proposing a road that would make parking easier and faster.

((This open field used to park thousands of cars on race day may soon have a new road running through it. Officials say it's needed because the road leading into the race track can not accommodate the traffic.

The proposed road would start at the top of Speedway Road and run through the field avoiding the property of the nearby homes. Walkways off the road would provide easy access for race goers to get to their cars and would keep them from walking in traffic.

But some residents on Speedway Road aren't so sure the proposed road would avoid their property. Bill and Edith Maxwell say the race track brought two other proposals to the Henry County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday that showed the road cutting through their back yard.

Several people were injured in Roanoke County when a car and van collide at a intersection.

The crash happened around six P-M at Middleton and Williamson Road.
According to investigators-- the driver of the car pulled into the path of the van.
A 60- year old woman in the car had to cut from the vehicle.
She and four people in the van were taken to the hospital with NON life threatening injuries.
Authorities say charges are pending against the driver of the car.

A accident in Bedford County this morning is under investigation by State Police and the Commonwealth's Attorney.
Police say it happened on Route 24 near Stewartsville around one a-m.
Investigators say the 45-year-old driver of one vehicle struck another car carrying two 20 year olds.
The names and conditions of all involved have NOT been released.
Investigators say charges are pending.

It was a day of rest for Presidential Candidate George W. Bush today as he prepares for the final week of campaigning.
Vice President Al Gore was hard at work, though, trying to get undecided voters to "swing" his way.

Two U-S patrol boats led the procession and a helicopter hovered overhead.
The Cole will be loaded onto the Norwegian "heavy lift" ship the Blue Marlin for the trip back to the U-S.
That operation is expected to begin tomorrow - and the trip should take about five weeks.
17 sailors were killed and 39 injured when two suicide bombers allegedly manuvered a small boat packed with explosives next to the Cole and then detonated it on October 12.

The Palestinians threw stones at the soldiers, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are still second in the brand new college football polls that are out tonight.
Both the writers and coaches placed Tech right behind the Oklahoma Sooners, the new number one.

As for Vick's condition, trainer Mike Goforth evaluated his sprained right ankle this afternoon and said that the swelling overnight was minimal.
However, Vick will remain in a walking cast with crutches until at least Wednesday and he has been fitted with a special brace.
Vick will be listed as day to day, and his status will NOT change until Friday, at the earliest.
Tech may not know if he can play until kickoff time on Saturday.
