Incumbant Congressman Virgil Goode's latest campaign ad is coming under fire from his Democratic opponent in the 5th district race.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
In a statement released yesterday, John Boyd says Goode's radio and television ads mislead voters about the congressman's stance on the Patients' Bill of Rights and prescription drug program for senior citizens.
Boyd says Goode supports weaker forms of the legislation.
[SUPER=203-Bedford]
But at a forum at Bedford's National Guard Armory last night, Goode called Boyd's claims "totally off base."

It may be back to work for two retired Tultex buildings.
Cohen Asset Management of California wants to buy one former plant in Martinsville and another in Asheville, North Carolina, and lease them to new owners.
The company already bought and leased a 630 thousand square foot building in Martinsville to Basset Furniture.
Tultex declared Bankruptcy last December, laying off about two thousand workers.
The sale of its former plants must first be approved by the U-S Bankruptcy Court in Danville.

The Railroad Retirement act fizzled in this session of Congress. It's a bill that could change retirement benefits of former railroad workers and their spouses.

The railroad retirement act would lower worker retirement age to 60 from 62. It would also cut railroad retiree taxes by 15 billion dollars.... and the tax money saved would then be invested in stocks and bonds.
[PRE-PRO PAGE 2]
But those who oppose the bill say the retirement fund is like a mini social security fund.
There are already three times as many retirees as active workers, not enough to support retirees.
The government already subsidizes the fund, and some don't want to spend anymore government money.
And just because the saved tax money would be invested, it doesn't guarantee the fund will make a profit.
[END PRE-PRO]
Sailor has written letters to senators, representatives and even the president. He says the Clinton administration backs the bill, as does most of the house and Senate.
