Two hours north in Volusia County workers are now hand counting 184 thousand votes. Representatives from the Gore and George W. Bush teams are watching. ((Complaints about a confusing ballot in Palm Beach brought a note from a Christiansburg viewer [William Shorter, Jr.], who says he gave a replica to his 7-year-old daughter. She apparently had no trouble filling it out correctly.
"If a 7-year-old can mark the correct circle, what does that say about the voters in Florida who could not? This ballot appeared to be straightforward enough for a 7-year-old. Seems like all this controversy about this particular ballot is much ado about nothing."
A viewer from Roanoke [Carol L. Perdue] commented:
"Until the people have spoken, nobody assumes the presidency in this nation. Period. Both candidates should back off and let the people speak and the courts decide. The people and the rule of law are supreme, not spin doctors and politicians."
Another person [Rick Protz, Lynch Station] would change balloting to a system more like Oregon's, in which everyone votes by mail.
"...perhaps voting over a short amount of time by snail mail or a ballot drop site or by having a secure voting machine at your local Post Office...Perhaps even a receipt could be sent to each voter informing them that their vote had been received and counted. That way there could be no exit polling for the media to use to either encourage or discourage voters."
