Emma Richards wanted to become tall enough for her dream job as an air hostess. She stopped growing when she reached four feet nine inches.
The operation took six hours. Emma's legs were broken in two places. A stretching mechanism was put in place and, as the bone regrew, the gap was extended. Emma grew a millimeter a day for four months. The
operation is usually carried out on people much shorter than four foot nine, but surgeons say they had no concerns about operating on Emma.
There are no guidelines as to who can go through the procedure. The whole process has left Emma an inch short at five foot two. She is now depending on a growth spurt to reach her target height.

Beamer told media members at the Birmingham Touchdown Club last night that he has been contacted by representatives or intermediaries from the University of Alabama.
However, Beamer has not any formal talks with Alabama athletic director Mal Moore.
Beamer's whole package at Tech is worth about $800 thousand bucks a season.
Alabama would likely offer him at least one point two million.
But it's more likely Tech will be the one increasing his salary as it did on December 1, 1998 when Beamer signed what was called a "lifetime contract."
