Good Afternoon, I'm Kimberly McBroom.
We're expecting the judge's decision anytime now on whether the a looming five P-M deadline will be extended for Florida counties to certify their votes.
It appears George W- Bush' campaign is offering a compromise on the issue, in hopes of ending the battle over the recounts.
Bush advisor James Baker announced earlier today that his side is willing to accept all manual recount results that completed by five o'clock.
That is, if Al Gore's team will agree to that deadline.
Drew Levinson is joining us now from Tallahassee, Florida to sort out the latest.

Then ladies and gentlemen this election will not be decided by the courts.
Locator: West Palm Beach, FL And earlier this morning in Palm Beach County, just before the hand count was to begin-a surprise. The board of canvassing voted to suspend the recount because it wasnt sure it had the legal authority to do so.

sot: Charles Burton/Chairman Palm Beach Canvassing Board.

"my main objective is to follow the law ...that's why we are waiting for legal guidance on how to proceed."
That came after conflicting opinions from top state leaders. The Republican Secretary of State says a recount isnt allowed unless there
is some sort of mechanical problem. But Floridas attorney General ---A

Democrat--says a manual recount is OK under state law. Now a judge will decide.)

Norfolk Southern is laying off more employees.
The company announced yesterday fourteen workers will be let go and it's closing its foundry in January.
That brings furloughs this year to nearly 10 percent of the company's workforce.

(( In its glory days, Norfolk Southern's foundry was an integral part of rail car part production.
But over the past few years, the company found it to be much more cost efficient to buy parts from outside manufacturers.
That, along with a decrease in rail car traffic has forced Norfolk Southern to close the foundry, and furlough 14 employees.
But this isn't the first of the N-S cutbacks. [PRE-PRO page 1]
On January 26, the company offered 1,200 of its employees an early retirement. Three days later, NS cut 550 union workers system-wide.
Then in April, 400 more employees were let go. [PRE-PRO page 2]
On August 8, Norfolk Southern fired 228 Roanoke Car Shop workers.
And just ten days later, the company offered another non-union buyout.
Finally, back in September, 215 rail team members furloughed, many of which live in Roanoke. [END Pre-pro]
To date, 2,844 workers have been let go system wide.
That means the company has reduced its workforce by just under 10% since January.
