A Danville man's death sentence has been overturned by the Supreme Court because justices said his court-appointed attorney did not properly defend him.

Terry Williams was sentenced to die because he confessed to killing Harris Stone in 1986. But his attorney never told the jury that Williams suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome and is border-line mentally retarded. He also did not call Williams' longtime friend as a witness or mention that Williams was a model prisoner.

Williams was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday. Attorneys nationwide say the case proves that federal courts will overrule state court decision if a defendant's rights have been trampled.

A small crowd of Northwest Roanoke residents turned out yesterday morning to help the mayor, a couple of city council members and the police chief dedicate the new branch on Lafayette Boulevard.
