A Danville man's death sentence has been overturned by the Supreme Court because justices said his court-appointed attorney did not properly defend him.

Jeffrey Allen Thomas is charged with capital murder in the 16-year-old's murder during what is called a rape or ATTEMPTED rape last January.
Yesterday, a Pulaski County judge continued Thomas' trial until February 16th.
Defense attorneys requested the delay because they're still awaiting THEIR expert's evaluation of D-N-A evidence in the case.
The trial WAS set to start at the end of this month.

Two new offices are helping Roanoke city police become a larger presence in the northern section of the city.

A small crowd of Northwest Roanoke residents turned out yesterday morning to help the mayor, a couple of city council members and the police chief dedicate the new branch on Lafayette Boulevard.
The building was donated by Vernice Law whose late husband practiced medicine there for dozens of his 60-years of service in Roanoke.
His son says Maynard Law would have been proud to see the way the building's being used.

A professor is dedicating a million dollars to the school.
Earl ``Bud'' Skeens is a history professor who has taught at the
college for 35 years.
School officials say Skeens apparently made the money through successful investments.
The surprise gift boosted the school's capital campaign to nine
million dollars.
Ferrum's goal is 13 million dollars.
