Christmas is known as the season of giving. But imagine a holiday with few gifts, no tree, no freedom. In this week's "Time Off" Shannon Young takes us to the Booker T. Washington National Monument for a glimpse into slavery's Christmas past.

((It'll be cold. It'll be dark. And the scenery will be bare. So what will draw hundreds of people to an old farm in Franklin County on a frosty night in December? How about an annual holiday event at the Booker T. Washington National Monument.
[SOT 18:06:39-18:06:58]
[IN Q=Christmas in Old Virgina...]

((Christmas in Old Virginia is a focused look on how Christmas was celebrated during 1864 this year. We're gonna talk about how the Civil War was affecting the people on the homefront as far as festivities and their traditions, owners and slaves during this period of time.))
[RUNS= 19]
[OUT Q=this period of time.]

On two evenings next week the park's staff will provide tours by lantern light. They'll be dressed as members of the Burroughs Family who owned this 207-acre homestead. Sinclair will take on the role of Jeremiah, a slave.
[SOT 18:07:00-18:07:17]
[IN Q=The slaves always...]

((The slaves always looked at Christmas as "The Big Time instead of just Christmas 'cause it was a week of Sundays. It was a week where they didn't have to do any field work, any laborious work. All they had to do was feed the animals and cook.)) [RUNS :17]
[OUT Q=animals and cook.]

Decorations and gifts were sparse. But the season was no less special. After leaving the farm Booker T. Washington recalled Christmas on the plantation as rich with feeling and sensation. He wrote about the slaves who were allowed to return to their families during the holiday season, often the only time of year they were allowed a reunion, and of the trees "glittering with icicles" and the "Christmas odors" that filled the air. In 1864, the farm was also infused with hope.
[SOT 18:09:17-18:09:38]
[IN Q=They're thinking about...]

((They're thinking they're about to be free, or they might be free. Lincoln's plan, the Emancipation Proclamation, has already been announced in this area. They already know if the Union wins they're gonna be free. This might be their last Big Times. How would that make them feel?)) [RUNS 11]
[OUT Q=make them feel?]
[SOT 18:20:25-18:22:40 STANDUP]
