An elderly Roanoke man died this evening after he was hit by a car.
92-year old (Bow-in) Bowen Louis Schrader was hit around 4:30 this afternoon on Signal Hill Avenue Northwest.
The driver of the car said he saw Schrader, then was blinded by the sun.
Schrader was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he died.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety video shows child-sized dummies smashed by airbags and thrown into windows.
The Institute says until children are 12 months old and at least 20 pounds- they should be placed in rear-facing safety seats in the back seat of a car.
After that- they should be moved into front-facing safety seats- but still in the back seat.

Hundreds turned out at Hidden Valley Junior High Saturday for a benefit to raise money for Sam's medical bills. More than 14-thousand dollars was donated. Sam is continuing his recovery at home.

Virginia's unemployment rate is at its lowest point in decades.
The same goes for Roanoke, Lynchburg and Danville.
According to the numbers Martinsville is also recovering.

That's good news considering Tultex shut down and laid off 25- hundred workers in 1998- After that, the city's unemployment rate jumped from five percent to almost 20 percent.
But recent back-to-school staffing and holiday- retail hiring has slimmed Martinsville's unemployment rate down to about eight percent.
All of the three former Tultex buildings have been sold - one to Sara Lee Activewear.
Sara Lee plans to hire some 300 hundred workers once its distribution center is up and running.

Charges have been brought against a Roanoke man and his wife for allegedly building homes without contractors' licenses.

Phillip Bane and his wife Patricia were responsible for building this house on Autumn Lane. State inspectors found a cracked foundation, interior wall damage, and vinyl siding that wasn't properly attached to the house. So they worked with the city prosecutors to bring charges against the Banes. The city has forced the couple to stop construction in the past for building violations. They will be tried in January.

But an October standoff with police in Radford may put 29-year-old Christopher DeMoranville behind bars for a while.
A judge sentenced him to seven months in jail on misdemeanor charges today.
Meanwhile, eight felony charges of assaulting officers were sent to a grand jury.
Police say DeMoranville held officers at bay for 11 hours when they went to arrest him at a Radford mobile home.
It was just three months earlier that Demoranville pled guilty to conspiring to kill a Circuit Court judge.

An 18-year-old in Botetourt County who helped make an explosive that killed his friend now faces felony charges.
Sheriff's deputies have charged Geoffrey Glass with making, possessing and transporting a firebomb. His friend 20-year-old Mike Henry died when the firecracker went off last month. Two boys who were there did NOT take part in making the explosive, according to the commonwealth's attorney. Glass will be arraigned December 28th.

Off the opening tip, Roanoke gets aggressive as Jason Strickland rips the ball away from a couple of stunned Yellow Jackets and takes it all the way to the hole for the layin. The Maroons are in front. Roanoke would work the ball around to Phillips. He will take the long jumper and get a friendly bounce on the baseline as it appeared Roanoke would have an easy night at the office.

But Macon's Tim Smith takes the outlet pass, pulls up and drains the jumper as Randy Mac hands Roanoke its second straight home setback by getting the 63-to-54 win.

The Redskins fired head coach Norv Turner yesterday morning after seven sub-par seasons. Sunday's missed field goal against the Giants sealed his fate, but Turner has been in trouble for a long time. He coached 109 games in Washington and lost 59 of them.

The Virginia Cavaliers now know they will be playing the Georgia Bulldogs in the O'ahu Bowl on Christmas Eve night in Hawaii at 8:30 eastern time.

But they don't know who'll be coaching Georgia. Last night the Bulldogs fired Jim Donnan after a 7-and-4 season. If he isn't allowed to coach the bowl game, the Georgia players say they might not play.
