After Tultex shut down and laid off 25- hundred workers in 1998, the city's unemployment rate jumped from five percent to almost 20 percent.

All of the three former Tultex building have been sold - one to Sara Lee Activewear.
Sara Lee plans to hire some 300 hundred workers once its distribution center is up and running.
