That boxes in Attorney General Mark Earley and Lieutenant Governor John Hager from dropping back from the race for governor to run again for the offices they currently hold.

Roanoke City Police are conducting their first holiday sobriety checkpoint tonight ..

35 officers are stopping cars on the 31-hundred block of Franklin Road Southwest between Beechwood and Avenham. The checkpoint was set up at 10 p-m .. and a police spokesman reports more than 200 cars have already been stopped. A dozen tickets have been written, several cars have been towed and police report at least one person has been arrested for being a habitual offender. The police department says the site was chosen because of alcohol-related traffic crashes and drunk driving arrests in that area.

Virginia State Police say the teenager involved in a manhunt in Rockbridge County died from a contact gunshot wound to the right side of the head. An autopsy was performed today, but according to a state police spokesman the medical examiner would NOT clarify if the wound was self-inflicted.

19-year-old David Owen Sensabaugh escaped police custody early yesterday morning by stealing a patrol car. He was later tracked to an area about four miles west of Lexington. That's when Sensabaugh apparently fired at 45 caliber handgun at deputies, and a deputy returned fire with a shotgun.

Sensabaugh was shot in the head and side.

There's been another confrontation in a southwest Virginia prison involving inmates from Connecticut.

State prison officials say the confrontation occurred at Wallens Ridge supermax prison in Wise County. A state spokesman says it happened last Sunday when about 70- prisoners refused to return to their cells after lunch.

He says guards shot "stinger" round at the protesting inmates to break it up. No inmates were seriously hurt.

Authorities in Burbank say a 12- year old girl was kept in a "slave setting" beaten and fed table scraps for at least two years. The couple caring for the child allegedly confessed to police after the girl was found last weekend. The 12 year-old girl - who police say looked more like 7 or 8 years old - remains hospitalized.

A grand jury has indicted a Roanoke College graduate for allegedly pulling a gun during a hazing incident last year. According to court documents, 23-year-old Scott Adam Ashkar manhandled a fraternity pledge while drunk and pulled a gun. The college suspended the fraternity after the incident. Prosecutors say they won't extradite Ashkar from Massachusetts, but they say they will charge him on a weapons count if he returns to Salem.

After a short baseball career, Chris Weinke went back to college four years ago and his dream of becoming college football's top player came true last night at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City.

Andres Galarraga is moving to the American League after a solid year with the Atlanta Braves.
