Earl Washington's request for early release has been turned down by the Virginia parole board.

The former death row inmate was pardoned by Governor Gilmore after D-N-A evidence cleared him of rape and murder.

But the Governor left it up to the parole board to determine whether Washington should be released from prison immediately. The board has denied Washington early release from a 30- year sentence for a malicious wounding conviction in 1983.
Washington's mandatory release date is February 12th.

Virginia's Governor will soon be the chairman of his party's national committee, a job that will take him all over the country.
But as his budget woes increase here in Virginia, it's been Jim Gilmore's rhetoric that's been all over the map.
Ellen Qualls goes back to the videotape, to listen in on what the Governor's been saying, then and now.

Twice a year, the Governor directly addresses the joint money committees of the General Assembly. [10:19:13 TAPE ONE GILMORE BUDGET 12/20 ]
This time, he broke from tradition and brought the First Lady on his arm, as he broke the news of budget cuts and borrowed money.
The presence of a First Lady can certainly can help keep the crowd friendly.
But Gilmore himself went on the offense, in a way some around Capitol Square saw as a bit disingenuous. [TAPE ONE GILMORE BUDGET 12/20 100:04:47] ((GILMORE: SOME URGED THAT WE PAUSE THE CAR TAX CUT AND INVADE THE REVENUE STABILIZATION FUND. I REJECTED THESE PROPOSALS.))
