Russia's Mission Control chief says the 140-ton vessel's batteries had somehow lost nearly all their power - which meant Mir didn't have enough energy left to communicate. He was dead on arrival at a Nashville hospital late last night. Family members say it appears to have been a heart attack.
Gilliam's life and career both had extreem highs and lows.
He started for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1974.
His drug addiction, in part, led to his benching and eventually destroyed his career.
He had been sober for three years before his death and had opened up a youth football camp in Nashville.

At one time, the Hornets had built a double digit lead, David Wesley cruises through the paint and the Cavalier defense for the easy layin.

But that lead evaporated and the game went into ovetime. Charlotte used the extra minutes to pull away for the 115-to-110 win.
