((A tense 24 hours for Russias space command. Monday, at 3pm, mission control loses radio contact with the space station Mir. The 140 ton vessel has no humans on board, and that means with no contact, it could fall out of the sky anywhere -- at any time.
There is no word yet on what caused the communication with Mir to go down, but the way Russia communicates with the Space Station may have something to do it.
While the United States communicates by satellite with its spacecraft - Russia uses a series of ground stations in Asia. That means, there is only one opportunity every 24 hours to verify contact. If Mir misses that window, it can take another full day to re-establish communication.
Still, Mir has had other tense moments since launching in 1985. In 1997, a cargo craft crashed into it - finally prompting the Russian government to bring the aging space station down.
That controlled descent is scheduled for February. And after this latest mishap, many people will no doubt be relieved when Mir finally falls from the sky - safely -- into the Pacific Ocean.

A long- awaited message of peace could arrive soon from the Middle East.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat are expected to let President Clinton know by mid- week if they think they can follow through on a peace agreement.
Under the proposed compromise, Israel would back off from control of the holy sites in East Jerusalem.
In return, the Palestinians would back off on insisting that refugees have a right to return to Israel.
The two sides held U-S brokered peace talks in Washington last week.

The move lowers the non-union retirement age from 55 to 53.
The program also allows some employees to add three years both to their length of service and to their age in calculating their pension.
Roughly 18 percent of the company's non-union workforce will be eligible for the program.
Norfolk Southern says the buyout offer is an attempt to reduce operating expenses.
The application deadline is December 31st.
