If you're planning to hop a plane to check out the Hokies in the Gator Bowl, you may want to first check your flight information. Some connecting flights to Jacksonville out of Charlotte are running behind schedule because of a massive winter storm thats pounding the East Coast. ((It started out as quaint -- but by nightfall, the storm of 2000 had overstayed it's welcome -- and overstepped it's bounds. Shattering nerves and records -- the first major nor'easter in five years swept up the East Coast -- dumping A FOOT of snow in downtown New York -- and up to TWO FEET in neighboring New Jersey.

("..one hell of a white Christmas!")

Armies of plows struggled to keep up -- but with snow falling at an inch an hour -- it wasn't easy. Residents were urged to stay home -- public transportation was running -- but slipping most of the way. Walking proved the most reliable -- skiing the most fun.
But while it may have been magical for some---

It was misery for others. With ice and slush covered runways, weary travelers at New York's three major airports could do little but sit and wait for the thaw. But behind all the mess, all the grumbling and bad mouthing this storm brought to New York -- It also brought the perfect backdrop for the nation's perfect party. For nearly a hundred years -- the Times Square New year's Bash has gone on -- 12 inches of snow isn't about to bury THAT tradition.

(MAYOR RUDOLPH GIULIANI, NEW YORK: "Doesn't meant anything to New Yorkers.")

(LEE COWAN/REPORTING: "In Fact -- there's hardly a remnant of the snow in Times Square. After

it was bulldozed into piles -- it was melted using specially machinery. New York's way of turning a blizzard, into drizzle. Lee Cowan, CBS News, New York.") ))
