Here in New York, workers raised the world famous ball in anticipation of the big midnight ceremony. Earlier in the day, sanitation crews scrambled to clean up more than a foot of snow that had fallen on the City. But in less than an hour, former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali will press the button to start the descent of the 1,000-pound Waterford crystal ball. More than 6,000 police officers are on hand, and manholes covers are welded shut as a security precaution. But with the cold weather, and all the hype gone from last year's Millenium celebration, THIS New Year's celebration looks like it'll be a toned down party.

A Roanoke woman is spending New Years Eve behind bars - charged with stabbing the man she lived with to death.

Roanoke police arrested 40-year-old Brenda Warren this morning and charged her with murder.

Police say Warren stabbed 47-year-old Edward Raymond Anderson the Third last night at the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road .. Police discovered Anderson's body today. A steak knife was also found at the scene. Police say Anderson and Warren were living at the Ramada Inn together .. They allegedly had a history of domestic problems.

Freezing temperatures are being blamed for a number of water main breaks that left many Roanoke residents without water this weekend. Roanoke Police say crews have been working for several days to repair the ruptured mains .. Police say major lines in Southwest Roanoke have been repaired and MOST people should have an adequate water supply. A few small mains still need repairs - but there's no word on when they'll be fixed.

870 Norfolk Southern employees have less than an hour left to apply for early retirement.
The buy-out offer lowers the non-union retirement age from 55 to 53.
In an effort to reduce operating expenses, N-S has cut nearly 10 percent of its workforce since January.

(( In it's glory days, Norfolk Southern was an integral part of rail car part production. But waves of layoffs have left a broken track in Roanoke.
This year, N-S has closed its foundry and the East End Carshops.
2,844 workers have been let go system wide.
That means the company has reduced its workforce by just under 10% since January. [INSERT GREEN FLASH HERE]
Striking Union workers at Rubatex returned to work in June after nine months on strike.
It's labeled as one of the most bitter labor disputes in company history.
Crossing the picket lines became so difficult, Rubatex filed an unfair labor practice suit against its union.
Union members say the company has not been cooperative in contract negotiations.
The two sides have still not come to an agreement. [INSERT GREEN FLASH HERE]
80 thousand union workers at Verizon went on strike in August. They say mandatory overtime and stress in the work place lead them to the picket lines.
Those in Virginia returned to work in less than three weeks, but their most trying days were yet to come.
Verizon employee Danny Lee Overstreet was shot at killed at a Roanoke night club allegidly by Ronald Gay.
Employees at Verizon Virginia set up a memorial fun for Overstreet's family. [INSERT GREEN FLASH HERE]
The contract between fiber giant Celanese and its union members expired June 19th. Workers threatened to strike on three different occasions, but the strike was avoided.
In August, 59 percent of the company's unionized workers voted in favor of a new three-year deal -- which includes a yearly three percent raise.
Mandatory overtime is still a topic of debate. [INSERT GREEN FLASH HERE]
Martinsville and Henry County are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Cinergy Corporation has plans to build a new power plant.
The rebound comes after the loss of the area's biggest employer, Tultex.
Back to school staffing and holiday retail hiring has slimmed Martinsville's unemployment rate down to about eight percent.
All of the three former Tultex buildings have been sold - one to Sara Lee Activewear.
Sara Lee plans to hire some 300 hundred workers once its distribution center is up and running.

Japanese researchers claim the physical interaction between people and pet robots could imitate the bond between real pets and their owners. They're using "Paro" - short for "Personal Robot"- as proof. "Paro" has been introduced to patients in a children's hospital ward .. Nurses are observing reactions when kids interact with the robot. Hospitals in Japan have been slow to implement real "Animal Therapy" for fear of accidents and infection. "Paro" was considered the best substitute.
