A researcher at the University of Virginia wants to make leeches obsolete.
Leeches have been used medicinally for nearly three thousand years and Patrick Cottler thinks that is long enough.
He has invented a mechanical device that serves the same purpose as the living blood suckers.
The two inch square device is a series of hypodermic needles attached to a tiny vacuum pumping system.
Cottler plans to market his mechanical leech, possibly under the name ``Smart Bandage.'' He's staying away from the word ``leech,'' figuring it wouldn't help business.

In the Outback Bowl, South Carolina battled Ohio State.
South Carolina wide receiver, Ryan Brewer was used to run the ball today and he made the most of it, rushing for three touchdowns. His seven yard run led to a 9-nothing Gamecocks lead with 10:58 left in the third.
Brewer iced the win here and South Carolina, winless in 1999, completes the SEC's biggest turn around winning 24-7.
[SUPER=03-Dallas, TX/FOX;]
The Cotton Bowl would pit Tennessee against Kansas State. Phillip Fulmer had his hands full. KU's Jonathan Beasley keeps the rock and scoots in from 14 yards out. 7-nothing Kansas State.
UT answers the bell in the second when Casey Clausen finds David Martin on a 17 yard scoring strike. 7-7.
But Kansas State led 21-14 after two quarters and outscores the Volunteers 14 to 7 in the second half to win the Cotton Bowl 35-21.
