((It would be a positive footnote to the end of the Clinton era -
President Clinton overcoming insurmountable odds - to finally find peace
in the Middle East.
Tuesday he was back at the bargaining table with Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat - a last minute meeting to try and broker a last-minute
deal.
But the talks come after another weekend of violence -- the most
devastating in the Israeli coastal town of Netanya. Here a car bomb
injured more than 40 people -- shattering what many think may be any hope for peace.
That appears to include Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak - who just
last week had accepted Clintons peace plan - but now appears to be preparing for full-scale war.
Ehud Barak/Israeli Prime Minister
We dont hope for it, we dont wish for it, well do our best that it wont happen, but we have to prepare ourselves...
Still, the prospect for peace is not totally lost. A Palestinian spokesperson says theres still a chance for progress - especially with
Arafat once again in Washington.
Hanna Ashrawi/Palestinian Spokesperson
This is indeed a very critical visit to Washington by President Arafat and a very critical and decisive meeting with President Clinton.
Gretchen Carlson Reporting:
If both sides do agree to a peace plan, it would be a huge victory for the Clinton administration. But after so many years of violence, the
bigger battle could be after the fact, and whether Israelis and Palestinians could ultimately stick to the plan. Gretchen Carlson, CBS News, the White House.))
