ISRAEL'S PRIME MINISTER, EHUD BARAK, SAYS HE HAS LITTLE HOPE OF ANYTHING POSITIVE COMING OUT OF THE CLINTON-ARAFAT MEETING... AND THE CONTINUING VIOLENCE ISN'T HELPING MATTERS.

(SOT BARAK)

As a result of the violence initiated by the other side, as a result of the fragility of the peace agreement, the violence and the beligerency of the other side might deteriorate into a full-scale confrontation.
ISRAEL HAS CLAMPED DOWN ON THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES IN RESPONSE TO LAST NIGHT'S CAR BOMB ATTACK IN AN ISRAELI TOWN NORTH OF TEL AVIV.
ALTHOUGH NO ONE WAS KILLED... MORE THAN 40 PEOPLE WERE INJURED... ONE CRITICALLY. ISRAELI OFFICIALS SAY HE MAY BE THE BOMBER.
AND TODAY... MORE BLOODSHED. ISRAELI SOLDIERS SHOT AND KILLED A PALESTINIAN MAN IN THE GAZA STRIP.
PALESTINIAN MILITANTS ARE CRITICISING YASIR ARAFAT FOR MEETING WITH PRESIDENT CLINTON... WARNING HIM AGAINST GIVING UP PALESTINIAN CLAIMS ON JERUSALEM AND PALESTINIAN REFUGEES' RIGHT-OF-RETURN TO THEIR HOMES IN ISRAEL.
BUT ARAFAT'S CHEIF NEGOTIATOR, ABU ALA, SAYS ARAFAT DIDN'T GO TO WASHINGTON TO GIVE UP ANYTHING.

(SOT ABU ALA, CHIEF PALESTINIAN NEGOTIATOR)

He wants to explain to President Clinton why we are unable to take these parameters as a basis for a settlement.

It broke out just before five yesterday morning.

But it took about four hours to bring the fire under control, because of the strong winds and bitter cold.
The cause has yet to be determined.
