Michael Ray Graham and another man were freed last week after their convictions for a double murder were dismissed for lack of credible evidence. In an interview published today in the New York Times, Graham says he's trying not to be bitter about his 14 years in prison. He tells the New York Times he was afraid to leave his mother's house in Roanoke at first, because he feared people would think he belonged in jail. Graham hopes to go back to work as a roofer.

A car flips on a Northeast Roanoke road this evening - narrowly missing a home.

The driver of this vehicle managed to walk away from the single-car accident on Hollins Road tonight. Police say the male driver - whose name isn't being released - told them he took his eyes off the road. The car hit an embankment, overturned and slid several feet. The driver freed himself from the car .. He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.. His injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening.

Many Virginians might support public schools - but few are willing to display that support as they cruise around town.
Only 33 motorists have signed up for a specialty license plate that would help fund books and classroom supplies. State officials say they need 350 applications before they'll produce the plate, which features a red schoolhouse. And a thousand need to be in circulation before fifteen dollars from each plate starts flowing back to school divisions.

The C-I-A is preparing for talks tomorrow in Cairo with senior officials from both sides -- but some of the top-level people who were supposed to attend won't be there, after all. An Israeli official says the talks will focus on resuming security cooperation between the two sides. He says more ambitious plans for the meeting have been scrapped. The Palestinian chief of security for Gaza won't be attending. His office says he can't take part as long as what it calls ''Israeli aggression against Palestinian people everywhere'' continues.

The Cinema Grill near Cross Roads Mall has shut down after two years in business. Theatre owner Debbie Steel says revenues have been down since the Valley View Grand 16 opened last year.

Steel was going to close the Cinema Grill down last month - but support from members of the community prompted her to leave it open a while longer. Steel said she thought they found a niche in the movie theater business in Roanoke by serving restaurant style food and alcohol. The Cinema Grill is the second theater to close in the past year, the Valley View Theater inside the mall shut down in 2000.

Potomac Air, a subsidiary of U-S Airways is taking off in Roanoke. The new airline has operations and maintenance bases in Roanoke.

Saints head coach Jim Haslett is the A-P's N-F-L coach of the year. Haslett, who guided the Saints to the N-F-C West title in his first year on the job easily beat out Philadelphia's Andy Reid in balloting by 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover pro football.
Haslett got 30 and a half votes ans Reid got nine.
