The Republican-led Senate Finance Committee is expected to begin attacking the tobacco money mechanism with which the Governor would help finance this budget.

On Wednesday afternoon police say a man walked into the Lyon's restaurant outside Nevada City, California and opened fire. Witnesses say he targeted certain people inside.

"A GUY HAD COME IN AND SAID WHERE'S THE MANAGER. AND SOMEONE POINTED OUT THE MANAGER IN BACK. THEY HEARD SHOTS AND EVERYBODY RAN." Including Craig Land, who was still under his table.

"AND WHEN I GOT UP I WAS STANDING JUST FIVE FEET FROM THE GUY. HE WAS FACING THE BACK WITH HIS HANDGUN AT HIS SIDE ..VERY NONCHALANT." Police say ten minutes before the restaurant shooting, a man walked into a county building and shot three people. He killed two county workers, and wounded a third. Another victim broke his leg when he jumped out of a window to escape. When police could not find the shooter, they took all the employees to the sheriff's office, and closed down local schools. Within an hour, parents arrived frantically looking for their kids.

Plans are in the works for American Airlines to purchase TWA.

American will pay 500-million dollars for TWA.
The C-E-O of American say this is not a move to eliminate the competition but rather to build a network to take customers anywhere in the world.
Critics says the deal will mean fewer choices for consumers and higher prices because there will be less competition.
The deal still faces regulatory hurdles and fights from consumer groups.

Norfolk Southern will have to pay 28 million dollars to thousands of its African American employees.
The federal judge's ruling comes after a seven-year class action suit filed by an employee alleging race discrimination.
Some 77-hundred employees will get part of the 28 million.
Norfolk Southern has also agreed to establish good faith goals for minority promotions.
The company plans to celebrate African-American Railroader month each February beginning in 2002.

Gusting winds knocked out power to hundreds of Bedford County residents, and damaged dozens of homes and businesses last night.

Bedford City police say high winds blew out windows and damaged awnings on several downtown businesses.
Nearby on Peaksview Street, this car was crushed by a falling pine tree.

Authorities say about 90 homes suffered damage to roofs and siding.
No injuries were reported.

This afternoon at three, Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick will hold a news conference where he will announce his intentions to enter the NFL draft.
One of the teams he could go to is San Diego.

((Frank Beamer, along with Virginia Tech assistant Jim Cavanaugh will attend Vick's news conference in Newport News tomorrow. Beamer expressed his support of Michael's decision in spite how much his loss hurts the team next season. Beamer commented from Atlanta this afternoon where he was attending the coaches convention. Vick was the nation's leading passer in 1999, but injuries hurt his stats this past season, but he returned to form to win Gator Bowl MVP honors. His departure is a shock to some of his teammates, but tailback Lee Suggs and full Back Jarret Ferguson, the primary offensive weapons returning in the backfield next season, are already preparing to take on the load. Vick's NFL value has become contagious. Suggs, who racked up over 30 touchdowns this past season, has received 15 emails from different sports agents just over the last several days. Lee has NOT responded, in compliance with NCAA rules and will be back next season. ((:))
In other good news for Tech, receiver Andre Davis, rumored to be leaving with Vick, released a statement from his home in Niskayuna New York where he is healing from recent ankle surgery.))

The Virginia Tech men's Basketball team picked up its first ever Big East Conference win.

Last night the Hokies stopped the Hurricanes of Miami from taking the Cassell by storm.
The first half was close though, Miami's Michael Simmons dishes off to James Jones. Jones pulls up and downs this one for three.
The Hokies' Brian Chase puts on the moves to get free from the defender, then Chase unleashes the three point bomb for Tech.
The Hokies and the Hurricanes traded three point goals this time it's Miami's Marcus Barnes, firing one off from the top of the key.

Joe Hamilton finds Danny Gathings on the baseline. Gathings makes the strong move to the hoop and rocks the board with the dunk and Tech gets the 85-74 victory over Miami.
