A dispute between Lewis-Gale Clinic and two of its former physicians is far from over.
The clinic has filed a law suit against the doctors in Salem circuit court for violating the "no compete clause" in their contracts.
In the meantime, the clinic had requested the judge grant a temporary restraining order against the doctors from practicing in the area until a final ruling was made.

When he plays with his friends, ANDi looks like any other monkey, but this 3-month old is the first monkey to ever be genetically engineered.

(SOT 13:58:20) Dr. Gerald Schatten, Lead Scientist

ANDis special because he carries that new gene in his genetic blueprint.
graphic
Dr. Gerald Schatten and his team of scientists, successfully cloned ANDi at Oregon Health Services University, but the process wasnt an easy one. While the scientists started with 224 fertilized monkey eggs, only 40 embryos and 5 pregnancies resulted. And even though 3 monkeys were born, only one survived.

(SOT - 13:59:30) Dr. Gerald Schatten

In this case we inserted a gene in the genetic blueprint but not in a specific location next time we want to develop the techniques of gene targeting.

(TRACK 3)

Dr. Schatten says that gene targeting could eventually lead to cures for human diseases like Alzheimers, diabetes, and cancer. And that's what makes cloning monkeys different from cloning sheep. Up until now, the most famous cloned animal was Dolly. Now, flocks of cloned sheep produce human proteins for use in the drug industry -- but cloned monkeys because they are so much more like humans -- would be used to fight a different battle -- disease.

(SOT - 13:32:26)

Many of these cures have been developed using mice models for disease but you know were different from mice.

(TRACK 4)

Still, theres no doubt cloning is controversial. While Dr. Schatten says his only purpose is to better understand how genes are regulated and how the environment may affect them, others are worrying what next.

(SOT)

By no means do we support any of this to humans.

(STAND-UP CLOSE) Gretchen Carlson Reporting

But with the technology of cloning monkeys already here the potential of human cloning is not far away ... and that will only lead to more controversy. Gretchen Carlson, CBS News. ))
