George W. Bush will become the 43rd president of the United States when he takes the oath of office today.
The swearing-in on the steps of the U-S Capitol follows a bitter and unprecedented legal war that delayed the outcome of the presidential election for more than a month after voters went to the polls.
President-elect Bush says his inaugural address will be a ``hymn to American unity.''

A Henry County woman is dead this morning after her ex-boyfriend allegedly opened fire in her apartment. Martinsville Memorial Hospital reports Michelle Yvetta Woods died shortly before 3-30 this morning... seven hours after she was shot. The Henry County Sheriff's Office says Woods' ex boyfriend - Dennis Hodge of Axton - was under a protective order when he shot her at her apartment on Meadow Green Drive in the Oak Level area of Henry County last night. Authorities say Hodge struck a deputy's vehicle during his arrest, and spit on another deputy while in custody. Hodge is being held in the Henry County Jail without bond.

Gay is charged with the murder of one man and malicious wounding of six others at the Back Street Cafe last year.

In a letter from the jail Gay says: "People here don't understand Nam Vets. I should be in the V-A system," he says. "Nobody here can understand why my mind was triggered to kill homosexuals," he writes.
The Canadian native joined the U-S Marines, volunteered for service in Viet Nam and has been treated in Veteran's hospitals in Florida and Tennessee. "V-A people know," Gay goes on to say. "They dealt with this since our first wars."

Virginia Tech is splitting its research and graduate studies programs in hopes of becoming one of the nation's top 30 research institutions.
Much of the research at major universities is carried out by graduate students.
But university officials say separating the programs will allow one group of administrators to concentrate on increasing research and development at the university while another group of school officials focuses on increasing the graduate student population.
The National Science Foundation ranks Tech at 50th nationwide, spending 170 million dollars on research and development last year.
