One of the regions biggest companies is making bigtime cuts.
The big shake up comes at Norfolk Southern... For the peple who work there, it is not good news.
Just one day before earnings are due out- N-S says it's cutting between one and two thousand workers nationwide.
[DOUBLE BOXES= /Microwave;]
News 7 business reporter Jennifer Miele is outside N-S in Roanoke- Jen- who will be affected.. and has N-S given a reason for these cuts?
Jean - no surer signs that these, the slowing economy is forcing N-S to make changes ..... even the company's stock stopped trading briefly today.
So N-S President David Goode made a difficult decision.
He and the company's board members have decided to keep most of the money they would ordinarily give to company shareholders, and use it to get the railroad back on track.

[PRE-PRO PAGE 1]
Here's a detailed look at the cutbacks: 1,000-2,000 jobs will go in the next 12 months, that's nearly six percent of its workforce.
N-S will also reduce dividends by 70 percent, sell 12,000 freight cars, eliminate or sell off 11 percent of its track, AND cut 10 underutilized facilities.
But how did powerhouse Norfolk Southern suddenly become vulnerable to change?
[PRE-PRO PAGE 2]
The company says a slowing economy, a decline in coal exports, and high fuel prices are to blame.
[PRE PRO PAGE 3]
But many employees feel the company bit off more than it could chew when it merged with Conrail. They say the company owes too much debt, is carrying too many assets, and its labor force is more than it can handle.

He is the father of the point-0-8 blood alcohol level for drunk driving in Virginia.
Just after midnight last night, Williamsburg area state Senator Tommy Norment was pulled by a state trooper, who says his car was weaving on Interstate 64 near Richmond.
The trooper charged Norment with driving under the influence, after checking with the Henrico County prosecutor to see if he qualified for legislative immunity during the General Assembly session.
Norment sponsored a major package of drunk driving bills that became law in July 1995, including lowering the blood alcohol level two-tenths of a percent.
This year, he's sponsoring a bill making it illegal to have an open alcohol container in a vehicle... and to study the danger of cell phones on the highway.
