Another fire in Roanoke leaves one couple's home in ruins.

The blaze started early this evening at a home on Shenandoah Valley Road. The homeowner says one of her tenants was filling a butane lighter when she dropped it and caught the couch on fire.

The tenant and her husband, who had just returned home from the hospital, managed to escape. Firefighters say the butane could have ignited only if she had a cigarette in her mouth.

That system involves drivers placing a white flag in front of the bus.
After each run, they're supposed to do a visual "walk through" and place the flag in the rear window.
The Superintendent would like the drivers to go one step further and check under the seats.

Three Blacksburg parents are charged with neglect for leaving their children in the car while they drank at a local nightspot.
Police found a baby, a 3-year old and a 12-year-old in a van outside a North Main Street restaurant after midnight Saturday.
They say the van was left running with an open beer on the dash.
Sarah Cumbee and Raul Garcia, both 19, were charged with felony neglect of the two young children.
Mildred Lynn Barker, mother of the 12-year-old, was also arrested.
The children are now staying with relatives.

Four people including two infants were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

One person was taken to the hospital complaining of chest pains.

H-T-S makes building ventilation systems.

Robert Downey Junior was back in court today on drug charges. The "Ally McBeal" star appeared in Superior court in Los Angeles facing charges of drug possession and being under the influence of a controlled substance. Downey was arrested last year when police allegedly found drugs in his room at the Merv Griffin Resort.
Both sides agreed to postpone the case. Downey's attorney says some evidence has not been received yet. The actor has already served a year in prison for violating probation on other drug charges. The District Attorney says in this case, Downey will be eligible for a drug program designed for lesser offenders.

Bedford County sheriff's authorities have ruled the death of former police lieutenant John McCane as accidental.

The 47-year was found dead in his home near Boonsboro Friday night.
His brother-in law, sheriff Mike Brown, says McCane had been working on an all- terrain vehicle in his garage when he apparently was overcome by exhaust fumes.
The state medical examiner's office says it appears the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.
McCane resigned from the Bedford County sheriff's department in 1998 after being accused of mis-using county funds.
He had also been arrested earlier this month after allegedly violating a protective order sworn out by his stepdaughter.

Virginia spends about 12 percent of the State's Budget on substance abuse.
That's about what it spends on higher education.

Today, the center released the results of a three- year study of 45 states.
The report showed that the state spent about 267-dollars per- Virginian on fighting drug, alcohol,and cigarette addiction.

Washington put the streak in jeopardy in the fourth shooting only 25-percent from the field. Jim Jackson led the Cavs with 14.

Juwan Howard paced the Wizards with 24 and Washington wins its fifth in a row for the first time since March 1997, beating Cleveland 95-89.

Mike Stevens has more on Preas who played Sandlot ball in Fallon Park and later starred at Jefferson High School and Virginia Tech before joining the Colts in 1955.

((Preas was a member of Baltimore's first ever world championship teams in 1958 and 1959. Preas played offensive line on those teams in front of good friend Johnny Unitas, who is shown here in July of 1964 helping Preas give a football clinic at Victory Stadium. Preas and the Colts also played the Steelers at the Stadium in 1961. After the 1958 season Preas was voted the Colts' "Unsung Hero Award." Preas, who has been battling Parkinson's disease in recent years is also a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in Portsmouth where the number 60 uniform he wore during his final season with the Colts in encased in glass.
