In Israel, the battle for prime minister is pitting neighbor against neighbor. Like these two men, Ehud Barak and Ariel Sharon stand far
apart on the only real issue in this campaign---how to achieve peace

with the Palestinians.

"I THINK TO A GREAT EXTENT IT IS THE PALESTINIANS WHO ARE GOING TO BE MAKING UP OUR MINDS AND NOT THE CANDIDATES THEMSELVES."

Opinion polls show Israelis heavily favor Sharon because they believe Barak's proposed concessions to the Palestinians amount to peace at any cost. Barak has been negotiating on how to share Jerusalem and has offered to give up 95 percent of the west bank and the Gaza strip.

(SOT DAVID GILAD/ISRAELI CITIZEN)

"HE THINKS BY GIVING AWAY LAND HE WILL GET PEACE, THAT'S NOT HAPPENING PEOPLE ARE GETTING KILLED."
