A man is found dead in the middle of a Franklin County Road. State Police say it appears 50-year-old Reggie James Hodges was hit by a vehicle. Some people discovered Hodges lying in the middle of Route 40 in Franklin County last night. Police want to hear from anyone who may know something about a truck seen to the side of the road near where Hodges was found.

Charges are pending against one of the drivers involved in a traffic accident last night in Roanoke County. Investigators say they plan to charge 22- year old Matthew Wills with failure to maintain control of his Corvette. They say Wills tried to pass another car on the shoulder, lost control and crossed the median on Peter's Creek Road. His Corvette was hit broadside by a van near Burlington Elementary. The driver of the van was not hurt.

Connecticut's prison chief says his state is out of room to keep its prisoners... so Connecticut will probably keep sending inmates to Wallens Ridge State Prison.
Connecticut's Commission on Human Rights criticized the prison in a report released last week. Two of that state's inmates have died at Wallens Ridge under questionable circumstances. 150 Connecticut inmates are currently being held at Wallens Ridge.

The execution of one of the country's most INFAMOUS inmates will NOT be broadcast. Prison officials have turned down Timothy McVeigh's request to have his execution broadcast on television. In a letter published in an Oklahoma newspaper, McVeigh complained that limiting the number of witnesses to his execution is not fair. About 250 people who survived or lost family members in the 1995 bombing have asked to watch McVeigh die. But there are only eight seats available for witnesses.

The Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame inducted its 10th class tonight.
Vinton native Henry Craighead starred in the Negro League and became one of the first blacks to play in the Class B Piedmont League.
Craighead died in June of 99 and is a member of this year's class.

Jim Taliaferro earned his spot in the Hall for his contributions to local baseball during his 22 years as Salem mayor.
Gary Walthall grew up playing baseball in the area and brought and coached the William Byrd High School team into state prominence.
Ed Whitson won 15 games with the Salem Pirates in 1976 and went on to pitch 15 seasons in the Majors.

It took a couple of extra holes but Phil Mickelson defended his title at the Buick Invitational beating Davis Love the third and Frank Lickliter on the third hole of a playoff.
The three finished tied at19 under par.

Love was eliminated on the second playoff hole and on the third Mickelson and Lickliter both had unplayable lies.


They both gave up a stroke and distance and returned to the tee. Mickelson would roll in this double bogey on the hole and he then watched as Lickliter putted for his.
He missed the shot giving Mickelson the win. Mickelson and Lickliter both shot 66 in the final round.

In less than 20- seconds... 30- years of sports history came down in a cloud of dust today. Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh was cleared away to make room for separate baseball and football stadiums being built nearby. Shortly after it opened in 1970, the Pirates won the first of their nine divisional titles. The Steelers won four Super Bowls in six years while in Three Rivers.
