The Pentagon called it a \self-defense measure...
(NATS)
American forces launched a surprise air strike against Saddam Hussein. The sounds of anti-aircraft guns and civil defense sirens sent Iraqi residents into a panic-- and forced them to run for cover.
The targets-- were Iraqi air-defense control centers on the outskirts of Baghdad--centers being used to deliver increasingly accurate anti-aircraft fire against planes policing the Southern no-fly zone.
(SOT: Lt. Gen. Gregory Newbold/Operations Officer--Joint Chiefs of Staff)
"The frequency and the more sophisticated command and control centers of their operation yielded an increased threat to our aircraft and our crews."
The strikes came 10 years after the Gulf War and after repeated attempts by Saddam Hussein to shoot down an American warplane. With the help of radars outside Baghdad, the Pentagon felt he was getting too close for comfort.
(NATS)
Because the strikes were so close to the Iraqi capital, President Bush was asked to approve his first military action of his administration. Ironically it was his FATHER's -- nemesis Saddam Hussein who was on the
receiving end--again.
