Dale Earnhardt, the man who defines what NASCAR is all about was killed today in the Daytona 500. News 7 Sports director Mike Stevens now joins us to try and put some perspective on both the life and death of the man known as the Intimidator. [TOSS TO MIKE in CHROMA KEY] Teresa, if the racing's world was staggered last year with the deaths of young lions Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin, there no doubt that the passing of Dale Earnhardt today has knocked NASCAR to its knees. The sport's ambassador died at 5:17pm this afternoon at Halifax Medical Center.

(( It took the ambulance carrying Dale Earnhardt less than 90 seconds to make the short trip down International Speedway Boulevard from the track to Halifax Medical center. But even that quick response time wasn't enough to save his life. ((DR. STEVE BOHANNON:)) Earnhardt was not wearing one of the new head and neck safety devices and as always he was wearing an open face helmet. ((DR. BOHANNON:)) As is often case in fatal racing wrecks, the accident did not appear to be that violent. But doctor Bohannon says the injury more than likely was a head injury at the base of the skull known as a basal skull fracture in which the weak base of the skull cracks from stress and causes rapid blood loss. ((DR. BOHANNON:)) The ironies surrounding Dale's death are almost unfathomable. On the day he passes away two of the cars he owns finish first and second in the Daytona 500. And his death comes Dale Earnhardt leaves NASCAR a tremendous legacy that includes 7 Winston Cup titles, 76 victories, and an unforgettable mustachioed grin that no racing fan will ever forget.))
