Dale Earnhardt, the man who defines what NASCAR is all about was killed yesterday in the Daytona 500.
The sport's ambassador died at 5:17 Sunday afternoon at Halifax Medical Center.

(( It took the ambulance carrying Dale Earnhardt less than 90 seconds to make the short trip down International Speedway Boulevard from the track to Halifax Medical center. But even that quick response time wasn't enough to save his life.

Earnhardt was not wearing one of the new head and neck safety devices and as always he was wearing an open face helmet.

As is often case in fatal racing wrecks, the accident did not appear to be that violent. But doctor Bohannon says the injury more than likely was a head injury at the base of the skull known as a basal skull fracture in which the weak base of the skull cracks from stress and causes rapid blood loss.

The ironies surrounding Dale's death are almost unfathomable.
On the day he passes away two of the cars he owns finish first and second in the Daytona 500.
And his death comes

A man and woman are found dead after a domestic dispute call leads Floyd County deputies into a shootout.

When deputies pulled up to the home of Kevin and Darlene Yoders Saturday night - 28 year old Roger Lee Whitlock of Check was reportedly in the driveway with a 44 caliber magnum revolver.
State police say Whitlock fired 6 rounds at three deputies... who then returned fire.
Whitlock then reportedly ran back inside the home -- where deputies found Whitlock and 30 year old Darlene Yoders dead.
Darlene's husband and five children were at home but were NOT hurt.
Dale Vest lives down the street from the Yoders family.
He also knew Whitlock.

State Police say Whitlock and Darlene Yoders were friends.
So far officials have not said what LED to the shooting - but did say it appears Whitlock died from the shots fired by deputies.
Officials have not said whether Whitlock fired the shot that killed Darlene Yoders.

The Navy is sending another deep- sea robot to search the wreckage of a sunken Japanese fishing boat.

Officials are trying to see whether they can raise the wreckage of the vessel, which went down after the U-S-S Greeneville surfaced beneath it.
The fishing boat is sitting in more than two- thousand feet of water, with no visible damage.
There are also no signs of the nine missing passengers who were aboard.
On Thursday the Navy plans to open a rare, PUBLIC inquiry into what went wrong.

The investigation into last fall's bombing of the U-S-S Cole in Yemen is now complete.

Yemen's President says authorities have the confessions of some of those involved in the attack.
The case will now be handed over the judiciary.
He also added that the prime suspect in the attack escaped and is now believed to be in Afghanistan.

Authorities in Hermosa Beach, California arrested 44- year- old Roger Clinton over the weekend on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Officers saw Clinton's Ford Expedition driving erratically.
They pulled the vehicle over and smelled alcohol on Clinton's breath.
Police say his blood- alcohol level was near or exceeding the legal limit of point- zero- eight.
Roger Clinton faces arraignment April second.
He was pardoned by his brother just last month for a 19-85 drug conviction.

An traffic accident in Blacksburg took the life of a Virginia Tech student early yesterday morning.
Police say 19- year old Megan Christenson died when the pickup she was riding in collided with a Toyota Camry.
Authorities say the driver of the Toyota appears to have pulled from Old Glade Road into the path of the pick-up.
The truck was traveling on Prices Fork Road.
Police say at this time... no charges have been filed.
No one else was seriously injured.

Radford University is growing.
The college will gradually take over the 78- acre St. Albans Hospital property in Pulaski County.
The deal is the result of an agreement between the college and Carilion Health system.
School officials plan to convert the property into an economic development hub for southwest Virginia.
The key tenants will be the Economic Development Center of Southwest Virginia and the new
College of Information Science and Technology.

((A Lynchburg police officer was taking the dog out of its kennel for some exercise last Tuesday morning, when the animal turned on him, biting him twice. The dog was put down, prompting a viewer from Giles County (Diane Ballard) to call us to task for even mentioning the incident.
"Do you know how many of those dogs save the lives of our citizens of Virginia and of their handler? The dog may have had his side of the story, too, as he was not being handled by his regular handler...By publicizing this incident the way you did makes people leery of dogs in police work. Doesn't law enforcement have enough problems with today's world without having to deal with people who do not know that these dogs are intelligent, well-trained officers of the law that would gladly lay down their lives to protect their handler and the citizens who are in danger?"
The night Robin Reed mentioned that the space shuttle and international space station would streak across the sky prompted dozens of notes, much like this one from Gretna (Larry Clark).
"At 6:31 the space station appeared next to what I assume was a planet to the southwest. I called my wife and 5-year-old to watch. It tracked across the sky with no chaser...Thanks for the cues. I've seen other high flying objects while night fishing and assumed they were in orbit. Now I know what I was looking at."

Seven-time Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt was killed yesterday in a crash at the Daytona 500.
On the final turn of the final lap, Earnhardt's car slammed into a concrete wall at 180 miles-per-hour.
Doctors say the legendary driver died instantly of head injuries.
The man known as the "Intimidator" leaves behind a legion of grieving fans.
Dale Earnhardt was 49 years old.

A shootout in Floyd county over the weekend involving authorities ends in the deaths of two people.

When deputies pulled up to the home of Kevin and Darlene Yoders Saturday night - 28 year old Roger Lee Whitlock of Check was reportedly in the driveway with a 44 caliber magnum revolver.
State police say Whitlock fired 6 rounds at three deputies... who then returned fire.
Whitlock then reportedly ran back inside the home -- where deputies found Whitlock and 30 year old Darlene Yoders dead.
Darlene's husband and five children were at home but were NOT hurt.
Dale Vest lives down the street from the Yoders family.
He also knew Whitlock.

State Police say Whitlock and Darlene Yoders were friends.
So far officials have not said what LED to the shooting - but did say it appears Whitlock died from the shots fired by deputies.
Officials have not said whether Whitlock fired the shot that killed Darlene Yoders.

A Virginia Tech student died in an early morning traffic accident yesterday.
Police say 19- year old Megan Christenson died when the pickup she was riding in collided with a Toyota Camry in Blacksburg.
Authorities say the driver of the Toyota appears to have pulled from Old Glade Road into the path of the pick-up.
The truck was traveling on Prices Fork Road.
Police say at this time... no charges have been filed.
No one else was seriously injured.

Radford University is about to get larger.
The college will gradually take over the 78- acre St. Albans Hospital property in Pulaski County.
The deal is the result of an agreement between the college and Carilion Health system.
School officials plan to convert the property into an economic development hub for southwest Virginia.
The key tenants will be the Economic Development Center of Southwest Virginia and the new
College of Information Science and Technology.
