On Capitol Hill today - Rodham's sister -Senator Clinton declared - what her brother did was just plain wrong. Hillary: "As soon as we found out Monday night, I was heartbroken and shocked by it, and, you know, immediately said this was a terrible misjudgment and the money had to be returned".
Across town - another extraordinary scene. With an hour's notice - President Bush calls his first press conference - trying to elbow his way into the headlines with talk about the budget. But the news quickly turns to the Clinton pardons. Bush: "should I decide to grant pardons, I will do so in a fair way. I'll have the highest of high standards".
The pardon flap took the President off-message, but the image had served its purpose - drawing a sharp contrast between the man in charge -- and the man under siege for another apparent miscalculation.... Charlie Cook/The Cook report you do a word association game and you say the name bill clinton, ya know people are going to be thinking -- ya know it'll be tough whether they say monica lewinsky first or whether they say pardons first President Clinton has professed to be 'deeply disturbed' at the revelation Hugh Rodham was paid almost $400 thousand to procure pardons for convicted drug dealer Carlos Vignali and Glenn Braswell - who was jailed in the 80s for fraudulent sales practices. However - sources tell CBS News that while Mr. Clinton 'doesn't remember' talking to Rodham about the pardons - he 'can't rule out the possibility' that he did. Rodham claims he never revealed his involvement to his sister and brother-in-law...not even when golfing with Mr. Clinton in Florida two weeks ago. And while Rodham yesterday gave back the money - because of the 'appearance of impropriety' - he maintains he 'did nothing wrong' in seeking the pardons. A source close to Rodham today said the fees he received amounted to 'not much money' compared to what some attorneys are paid for successful pardons.))
