Governor Gilmore has ordered all state flags lowered to half-staff... Eighteen members of the Virginia National Guard's Red Horse 203-rd civil engineering squadron were killed. Three crewmen of the Florida-based plane also died in the Georgia crash. The Virginia guardsmen men were returning to the Virginia Beach area following a two week training mission in Florida.
In a written statement-- Governor Gilmore described the Air National Guard unit as one of the nation's finest. Jennifer Jones has more.

A DUI arrest in Richmond early this morning led to the discovery of a missing Roanoke woman. Police at Virginia Commonwealth University say when they pulled over Antonio Garland he confessed to killing his girlfriend. This morning - Roanoke police found the woman's body in her apartment. She had reportedly been dead for days.

A Rocky Mount teen died yesterday as a result of an accident earlier this week.
Police say Keith (luh-pradd) Laprade died early Friday morning at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The 16-year-old lost control of his car and crashed into trees on state Route 619 just south of Rocky Mount Tuesday evening.

Engineers made a hasty retreat from the historic Capitol after finding more earthquake- related damage today. Inspectors found that some of the massive columns supporting one of the world's largest domes had shifted. They say it was best to get people out of the building while they investigate both the bases and tops of the columns.
Damage totals are hovering around two BILLION dollars following Wednesday's six point eight earthquake.

Winthrop scores a three-peat. The Eagles won their third straight Big South Tournament Title last night at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Liberty met Elon in a morning contest at the Roanoke Civic Center. And the Flames were NOT hot early.
Loretta Lawson driving to the hoop, helped the Phoenix to a 22-21 half time lead.
Neither team shot well. Liberty hit just 25-percent of its first half attempts, while Elon made only 23 percent of its shots before the intermission.

Then watch as Larue fakes the shot and goes inside to Dean'na Mitchelson who lays it in off the glass.
The Lady Seminoles work the defense turning this steal into an easy backet cutting the U-V-A lead to 4.

((My how kids have changed, hair color is just the beginning. The single and double A state wrestling tournament has kept pace, especially when it comes to keeping score and time of the matches. ((:))
When the tourney first rolled out the mats nine years ago at the Salem Civic Center, time and score were kept with pencil and paper. Now a state of the art timing system monitors each mat. Computers and mouse pads have replaced pens and paper, improvements that ease the minds of coaches.))

This is their first visit to Roanoke.... although it's their fifth season of performing. They've opened for the Four Tops and the Temptations and appeared on the Today Show.
