A friend says he stopped at her house that night.
They were among about a dozen witnesses called by the defense today.

Police responded to the Deerwood Apartment complex around 10:30. That's where Gracie Yvette Dillard had been shot in the head.
Her boyfriend, 29- year- old Gregory Curtis Jones, has been charged with shooting her in a domestic dispute.
Jones is now at the U-V-A Medical Center, recovering from self-inflicted wounds to his wrists.

A federal judge still has to decide whether Pledge is guilty of bribery and extortion or simple robbery. Pledge will be sentenced accordingly.

The investigation may have been slowed by a legal doctrine known as "Garrity."
Though Pledge told federal investigators LAST JUNE that he'd accepted money and drugs from suspects without accounting for them, the Police Department was not made aware of that. At the same time, under Garrity, the police department couldn't reveal to federal agents statements Pledge had made to Internal Affairs investigators.
The city couldn't flat-out fire Pledge, for fear he would sue, file for discovery and compel the feds to reveal specific facts and sources.

A new program aimed at cracking down on counterfeit check scams is getting a big "thumbs up" from Lynchburg- area merchants.
Steve Smallshaw tells us how police hope to make an impression on would- be con artists.

(( The checks started showing up last November.. payroll stubs from major companies that looked like the real thing.
Banks and convenience stores would cash the checks only to realize later they were clever fakes.
Investigators think it's the work of an informal group that knows what it's doing. [Standup ] ((Police say the group targets major corporations like Lowe's and Pizza Hut and uses their corporate logos to create fake payroll checks. Eventually, word gets out among local banks and merchants to be on the lookout for these checks.. but by then, the crooks have moved on to a new company.))

So before they cash a check, authorities are urging local merchants to start asking for two forms of I-D, including a thumbprint on the check itself.
It's something SunTrust Bank has been doing for three years with non-account holders.. and it's cut their bad check losses dramatically.

The Science Museum of Western Virginia is already operating on a reduced schedule... and its 38 employees could all be gone by in a matter of months.
The Governor's spokeswoman says blame the Senate... but acknowledges only 41 museums and historic sites got any help at all in Gilmore's proposed budget amendments -- which were never passed.
The Virginia Association of Museums calls the budget fiasco "shortsighted," since a new report shows arts and culture are a BILLION dollar a year business in Virginia... the same cost as NO car tax.

The Dallas Cowboys, America's team, dumped its American hero tonight - cutting Troy Aikman. The veteran quarterback was waived tonight by Dallas, one day before the team would have had to pay him a $7 million dollar bonus.

Aikman's agent Leigh Steinberg says he will not comment on the Cowboys' action until he sees if Aikman is picked up by another team. There is a strong possibility that Aikman may end up in San Diego reunited with his former Dallas offensive coordinator, Norv Turner.

The Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame golf tournament is 28 years old this season. And the Hall's growth has created some changes this year.
