A suspected drunk driver remains hospitalized after being shot by a state trooper in Amherst County last night.

Authorities say a trooper had tried to pull the man over near the intersection of Route 29 and 130 when he took off, leading police on a short, high- speed chase.
The chase ended when the suspect ditched his car near Seminole Drive and took off on foot.. another trooper pursued him and ordered him to stop.

The suspect was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital for a wound to his shoulder.
Police spent several hours at the scene early this morning.

Rescue crews responded to the call around 7 - after someone discovered the man and woman in the woods near Hunter's Lane. Authorities say it appears the driver lost control of the all terrain vehicle and flipped... possibly landing on one of the patients.

One accident led to the second ... and drivers in the southbound lanes paid the price. Some faced backups of three miles.
One of the people involved in the accidents is charged with reckless driving.

That wasn't the only accident to tie up traffic last night. Another one resulted in charges of driving under the influence.
This one happened on Bent Mountain Road near Autumn Park Drive. Police say a car was turning into a driveway when a Cadillac - driven by Lonnie Webb of Roanoke - came up behind, hit the car in the rear, then side-swiped it. The drivers of both cars were taken to the hospital, but police say their injuries do not appear life threatening. Webb is charged with D-U-I.

Fire investigators say an A-T-V is to blame .. for a weekend forest fire atop Foster's Knob in Botetourt County.

The fire started Saturday afternoon. At last report, it was still burning but almost out. The state Forestry Department says around 15 acres burned .. and that an all-terrain-vehicle sparked the blaze.
Forestry officials say if the driver of the A-T-V is located - he or she may face charges. Authorities expect the fire will be completely out very shortly.

The pair helped successfully attach the Italian cargo container called "Leonardo" to the international space station.
The shuttle's robot arm was used to actually lift the module.
The reusable module is packed with five tons of gear that will be emptied before the module is returned to the shuttle for Saturday's un-docking.
The mission was the 101st spacewalk in U.S. history.

The airline and its mechanics' union failed to reach a contract settlement before a midnight deadline.
Talks are now headed for an emergency board that President Bush created.
The board will prevent a strike until at least the middle of May.
Negotiators have reached tentative deals on parts of the contract, but are at a crossroads on key issues of wages, pensions, and back pay.

Sarah Jessica Parker claimed the prize for Best Actress in a T-V comedy.
And Robert Downey, Junior won for Best Actor for his role on "Ally McBeal".

A suspected drunk driver remains hospitalized after being shot by a state trooper in Amherst County last night.
State Police say it started with a brief car chase and continued on foot. Police say the suspect was shot when he made a threatening gesture toward his pursuer.

Roanoke fire investigators have some work ahead of them. They're treating a fire last night as suspicious.
Fire officials say the occupants were recently evicted, and the home was empty.

Two people are hospitalized this morning .. after the A-T-V they were riding flipped over last night in Pittsylvania County.
Rescue crews responded after someone discovered the man and woman in the woods near Hunter's Lane. Authorities say it appears the driver lost control of the all terrain vehicle and flipped.
