((Russian ground controllers have stabilized MIR for its final plunge to earth. On Thursday they powered up its orientation system ..then fired the thrusters to align its solar panels with the sun. That allows MIR to recharge its batteries.
When MIR safely passes over an uninhabited part of the Pacific Ocean ..controllers in Moscow will fire a rocket ..and send the space station plunging back to earth. Travelling 17,000 miles per hour, MIR will begin to burn and break up when it hits the atmosphere. But about 25 tons of debris should survive and splash down in the South Pacific. MARC HERRING/HERRING MEDIA GROUP: "Just the sheer excitement of seeing something so big happen is going to be incredible ...just absolutely incredible." Marc Herring is bringing a group of scientists, space-watchers and reporters close enough to see MIR's re-entry. They hope to videotape it and broadcast what they see on a website. "Got the new nextel numbers? no, not yet. We need the new nextel numbers." The group has already left for Fiji ..where they'll fly a plane high up on the horizon to see it firsthand.
MIR allowed human beings to live in space full-time ..and will be the heaviest spacecraft ever dumped. TOM CROUCH/NATL AIR & SPACE MUSEUM) "I think we have to trust that the people who are handling that are going to do the very best they can to make sure it doesn't hit populated areas." CHRIS LAWRENCE/CBS NEWS: "But a lot of countries are taking no chances. Some have formed task forces to monitor the re-entry. And Australia and New Zealand cancelled some commercial flights. It looks like a wristwatch and it checks sugar levels every 20 minutes using tiny electric currents.
It can also sound an alarm as blood sugar drops to dangerous levels.
Still the F-D-A says the Glucowatch won't completely replace the finger prick blood tests. It says the device is sometimes wrong, especially when the person is sweating heavily.
It recommends patients always use a fingerstick before deciding to use insulin.
