It happened around 5:30 outside an apartment complex in the Northwest section of the city.
Tonight the cab driver, 30 year old John Powers of Salem, is at Duke Medical Center where he underwent surgery.
Kate Weidaw spoke with co-workers of Powers who say incidents like this one are rare.

The call for a taxi came in at five in the morning. Dispatchers asked John Powers to pick up two men at the Salem View Apartments on Panorama Avenue. The pair allegedly asked Powers to take them to West Side Boulevard. But, when they were behind the apartment building, officials say the two men demanded money, shot out the two way radio, and then shot Powers once in the back. The pair then fled the scene. Neighbors in the apartment building called police after they heard a horn blowing for several minutes.
