The call for a taxi came in at five in the morning. Dispatchers asked John Powers to pick up two men at the Salem View Apartments on Panorama Avenue. The pair allegedly asked Powers to take them to West Side Boulevard. But, when they were behind the apartment building, officials say the two men demanded money, shot out the two way radio, and then shot Powers once in the back. The pair then fled the scene. Neighbors in the apartment building called police after they heard a horn blowing for several minutes.
Yellow cab drivers like Eddie Sutton say the night shift can be a dangerous time to work, you just have to be careful.
