Officials say an E-P-3 patrol aircraft, like THIS one, was on a routine surveillance mission over the South China Sea.
The plane and its 24 crew members were forced to land on an island after it collided with a Chinese jet fighter yesterday.
China blames the mid-air collision on the AMERICAN pilot, making relations between the two countries even shakier.

The call for a taxi came in at five in the morning. Dispatchers asked John Powers to pick up two men at the Salem View Apartments on Panorama Avenue. The pair allegedly asked Powers to take them to West Side Boulevard. But, when they were behind the apartment building, officials say the two men demanded money, shot out the two way radio, and then shot Powers once in the back. The pair then fled the scene. Neighbors in the apartment building called police after they heard a horn blowing for several minutes.
