((The Osprey is one of the militarys most expensive, and controversial programs.
Now a Pentagon report has narrowed down the cause of a fatal crash that has placed the future of the high profile aircraft in jeopardy.
Maj. Gen. Martin Berndt/US Marine Corps: This accident has been thoroughly investigated. The mishap resulted from a hydraulic system failure, compounded by a computer software anomaly.
The report focused on a crash in December of last year...a mishap that killed four Marines based at Camp Lejune North Carolina.
Berndt: The aircrew reacted immediately and correctly to the in-flight emergency as they were trained to do. We consider them to be without fault in this tragedy.
The Marine Corps wants to buy 360 of the super sophisticated planes. It has a unique ability to takeoff like a helicopter, rotate its engines and fly like an airplane.
But with unique abilities came unique problems and challenges for engineers.
Problems the Marine Corp admitted it knew about long before the crashes took place.
The report concludes a major redesign of the hydraulic and computer system may be needed to keep the Osprey flying.
But with its price tag in both lives and dollars rising, experts are wondering just how long this bird of flight will remain in the air.
