The violence stems from a community protest against the police shooting of an un- armed black man.
Over the weekend, a white police officer shot and killed 19- year- old Timothy Thomas.
Police say the officer had been trying to arrest Thomas on 14 pending misdemeanor charges.
Last night, the mayor made an appeal to end the violence, and replace it with public discussion on the matter.

In New Jersey, police shoot and kill a former postal worker after he stabs four of his ex co- workers.

Authorities say they had to shoot the man after he refused to drop his weapons, which included a handgun and two knives.
Prosecutors say the man walked into the lobby of the bulk transfer facility in (KAR-nee) Kearny, New Jersey yesterday, and attacked the workers.
The injured victims were taken to hospitals, where they were treated and released. Authorities say the gunman was a former temporary employee at the facility, who resigned in March after a personnel dispute.

A second man has been identified in connection with the shooting of a cab driver in Roanoke last weekend.

29-year-old Shawn Conace Vaughn is charged with robbery, aggravated assault and violating parole after he and another man allegedly shot their cab driver early Sunday morning.

Police say Vaughn and Phillip Alex Foreman demanded money from cab driver John Powers, shot out his two way radio, and shot him in the back.
Phillip Foreman was arrested Monday.
The cab driver is in fair condition at Duke University Medical Center.

A judge certified charges of aggravated malicious wounding and carjacking against 17-year-old (Tuh-HEAR) Tahir Alston yesterday.

He's one of four boys at the academy for troubled juveniles charged in the March 5th attack.
Counselor David Allen Hipes testified that another boy beat him with a steel pipe and stole the car they were driving to a restaurant.
The three other boys will be in court next month.
Prosecutors say one planned the crime the night before his release from the leadership academy.

Historians have made what they call a significant discovery at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello.
They believe they've found a long- lost slave cemetery on the grounds of the historic plantation.
