Decreased scoring in the N-B-A over the past few years prompted owners to make some changes. Beginning next season, the N-B-A will allow zone defenses and require teams to push the ball past midcourt within eight seconds instead of ten. A defensive three-second rule will be established for players inside the paint who aren't closely guarding anyone. Refs will also allow brief contact initiated by a defensive player if it doesn't impede the ballhandler's progress.
