First Union and Wachovia say one is better than two.
This morning the two banks announced they are merging.... the new company will be called Wachovia Corporation.
It will be the largest financial holding company in the Southeast and East Coast region.

News 7 Business Reporter Jennifer Miele is in our studio today with the story.

Kim, given First Union's recent string of layoffs, the merger did come as quite a shock to the financial world.... mainly because First Union's troubled state came about from mergers and acquisitions just like this one.
Nonetheless, the new financial giant will be the fourth largest bank nationwide.

Baker went on to say the merger means Wachovia and First Union aren't just one "big company", but that the new company has all the pieces it needs to survive and thrive.
To keep those pieces together... the company will be head quartered in Charlotte, with regional head quarters for North and South Carolina banks in Winston Salem.
But the merger doesn't come without change.... Wachovia plans to shave nearly 900 million dollars off of its budget. It will do so by cutting about 7000 positions.
No word yet on who will be cut or when. ))

As for customers... a bigger bank means more accessibility... in fact, the new Wachovia will have more A-T-M's than any other bank in the region.
But there may be some merger transition troubles along the way.
We'll have reaction on that from both Wachovia and First Union tonight on News 7 at 5 and 6, Kim.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's department is investigating an apparent murder suicide.
Yesterday authorities responded to the home of Jackie and Karey (Carrie) Phibbs (Fibbs) on Robinson Tract Road at six p-m to find both had been shot and killed.
Officers say the evidence points to Jackie first killing his wife and then turning the weapon on himself.
The couple has no children and has reportedly been estranged.
