The race for mayor of Rocky Mount will be decided by area voters on Tuesday -- a year before the race should actually take place. Since Rocky Mount annexed land from Franklin County last year, state law requires new elections. As Richard Lesko reports, this out-of-place race is shaping up to be something out of the ordinary.

It all started with a library that has yet to exist.
When Rocky Mount's revitalization group wanted to build a new library, its Mayor said no -- not if it means spending Rocky Mount's money without any contribution from the county. [TC:00:47:15] ((BEN PINCKARD/ROCKY MOUNT MAYOR: IN MY 25 YEARS IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT, 18 AS COMMISSIONER OF REVENUE, AND SEVEN ON TOWN COUNCIL, I HAVE NEVER DISAGREED WITH THE EXPENDITURE OF REVENUES AS MUCH AS I DO AND HAVE WITH THE LIBRARY.))
[RUNS= 12]

This issue, Mayor Pinckard says, IS the reason he has an opponent in Tuesday's election.
Oddly enough, his opponent says the library isn't an issue at all. [tc:00:35:23] ((MARK NEWBILL/MAYORAL CANDIDATE: WE ARE LOSING INDUSTRY AND TEXTILE. THE STANDARD REGISTER JUST ANNOUNCED THEY WILL BE CLOSING. I THINK THOSE ARE THINGS THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL NEED TO WORK WITH THE BOARD OS SUPERVISORS, THAT'S WHERE WE NEED TO BE FOCUSED.))

Newbill says it's joint efforts between the county and the town that will lead the way to a better community.
And that, he says, is something he can do better than it's being done right now. [00:35:44] ((THIS FACILITY RIGHT BEHIND US, THE FARMERS MARKET, WAS A JOINT PROJECT BETWEEN THE COUNTY AND TOWN COUNCIL.))
[RUNS= 05]

But Newbill's age -- 35 -- and his three years on town council are concerns to his critics.
Pinckard says Newbill's lack of experience will hurt a town that is already facing growing pains amounting to millions of dollars of debt. I will admit that some take it too far. We are not one of them and I don't think we should be shown that way."
A professional wrestler (Tommy Boothe/Roanoke) wrote: "It is a shame to see kids around the country attempting to do what us professionals train weeks and months to achieve. While some people think that wrestling is 'fake' and anyone can do it, they are sadly mistaken. It takes a special breed to make it in the professional wrestling business."
A viewer from Roanoke County (Scott Setchel) had a similar opinion. "I think that backyard wrestling is an outrage and a black eye on a 'sport' that is trying to change its image. Hopefully, if more local wrestlers that are trained speak out against it, then maybe we can help keep these young children from getting seriously hurt."
And another viewer (Chris Fyfe/Laurel Fork) said: "These kids think they are having fun? Wait until one of them becomes seriously injured or worse. Let's see how much fun they are having then."
