It was the announcement Japan has wanted to hear for almost eight years. The Crown Princess is pregrant. A spokesman for the Imperial Palace went on nationwide television with a very brief statment confirming that Princess Masako is three months pregnant and in good health.

(file footage of wedding)

Ever since Masako Owada married Crown Prince Naruhito, Japan has been waiting for the couple to produce a chile. The birth--expected in November or December--will probably produce as much public excitement as the wedding did...especially if it's a boy. A male child will ensure the succession to the imperial throne for one more generation. Today, prices for baby products manufacturers soared dramatically on the Tokyo stock exchange.

(magazines-from APTN material)

Japanese media have been obessesd with Masako. A graduate of Harvard with a promising career in the Foreign Ministry, she was expected to open up the closed world of the imperial family, but instead she has become the quiet consort to her husband. But still, the media attention is so great that it was blamed for her suffering a miscarriage two years ago.
The princess has virtually dropped out of sight since rumors of a possible possible pregnancy began a couple of months ago. When she went for medical check-ups, the waiting cameras barely glimpsed her inside a curtained car. The palace spokesman today asked the public to leave her in peace.
