A swat team used tear gas to end an eight hour standoff in Pittsylvania County today.

The standoff began just before eight this morning at Victory Baptist Church in Ringgold.
Deputies say 55 year old William Freeman of Tennesse went to the church seeking assistance.
A church worker called deputies after Freeman became disorderly.
Freeman then held himself up in the church annex armed with a knife.
After negotiations failed, deputies used tear gas to end the standoff just before four o'clock.
Freeman is charged with felony abduction for trying to hold the church worker hostage.

An early morning car fire killed a Roanoke man yesterday.
Authorities say 21 year old James Sexton Junior parked his car on Merriman Road. Then, investigators say, he may have fallen asleep, and dropped a lit cigarette on his seat. Investigators found Sexton about 30 feet away from his car with burns over most of his body.

A Roanoke teenager is still in critical condition following an accident on Peters Creek Road last night. Police say the 16- year old pulled into the path of a Ford Explorer. Authorities are not releasing the boy's name because of his age.

But how about a resort lake?

Smith Mountain Dam and Lake are unusual examples of the uses of eminent domain, the taking of private property for public use.

In this case, the primary use was electric power, but the lake created a retirement and resort center .. and a financial windfall for those with the luck, or foresight, to buy property along the water's edge.

But before there was a Smith Mountain Lake, there was this -- forest and farmland for tobacco growing. APCO looked at the land and the nearby rivers as a perfect place to build a hydroelectric dam. The company bought 500 properties, 30 of which had to be taken by eminent domain.

Construction on the dam began in 1960 and water from the Blackwater and Roanoke rivers began filling the lake in 63. Two and a half years later, Smith Mountain Lake reached its full size.

So on his Grandfather's advice Willard bought his first farm in 1969 at the age of 23. He later developed Waterfront, then Water's Edge, and the Boardwalk. He's watched the lake change the look of the communities around it.

A Lynchburg police officer injured in a K-9 attack earlier this year was given the department's highest commendation for bravery today.

Sergeant Rick Ruggieri (roo-JER-ee) got a standing ovation as he received the Medal of Honor during ceremonies at the Lynchburg police department.

The new snow leopard cubs at Mill Mountain Zoo are growing up.

The cats were weighed this morning for the second time since being born May fourth. The male and two females each gained between a third and a half pound since last Thursday's weigh-in. Two of the cats have both eyes open. One cub has one eye open, and one eye closed. The zoo says the cubs' blue eyes will turn brownish-gold as they get older. It'll be about another month before the babies will be available for viewing by the public.

Joe Nemechek will likely miss more than just the Winston all-star race this weekend. Today doctors at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Sale discovered that Nemechek not only has a broken shoulder blade but also a broken elbow. He will be in a cast for at least two weeks.

This 1942 L-3 reconnaissance plane is the same kind of aircraft used in the D-Day invasion.
A group of aviation buffs spent the past year rebuilding and repainting it.
