The Altavista fire chief arrived to find this warehouse engulfed in fire.. he immediately called for help.

Firefighters from four area volunteer companies responded.
With the building already a total loss, their main goal was to keep this gas tank.. filled with 30- thousand gallons of gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene.. from exploding.

Their hard work paid off.. the tank never ruptured, and other nearby fuel tanks were never endangered.
An environmental response team from Ross Labs helped corral a small amount of fuel that leaked from the site.. and everyone in town breathed a sigh of relief.

Frances Shoemaker heads up the Sheltered Workshop of Altavista.. a non- profit agency that employs disabled persons for light manufacturing and which owns the warehouse.
Losses are expected to exceed 200- thousand dollars.. but Shoemaker says they'll rebuild as soon as possible.

Police say the struggle for a gun ended in the fatal shooting of a Southeast Roanoke man.

It happened just after midnight in this house on Morgan Avenue.
Police say 27-year-old Edward Hodge was handling his friend's gun.
27-year-old Donald Lee Carter was shot in the head and killed as he tried to wrestle the gun away.
The bullet also struck 21-year-old George Chattin, who lived in the house, in the neck.

No charges have been placed...
Police say the shooting appears to have been an accident.
They hope a gun residue test will help determine what happened.

The F-B-I has been holding out... not only on Timothy McVeigh.
Today former Christiansburg Attorney Keith Neely got another 200 pages of documents from the F-B-I. And it comes long after the court- ordered deadline for the government to hand over the evidence used to convict Neely of drug trafficking and money laundering.

A lawyer from the F-B-I's Office of General Counsel appeared before the judge today, explaining that a lot of the information was in the F-B-I's Richmond field office.

"The explanation has a familiar ring to it," said the Judge today, citing F-B-I Director Louis Freeh's testimony on Capitol Hill this week. Freeh told Congress the Bureau had failed to turn over material to McVeigh's lawyers, because the Field Offices hadn't sent it in to Headquarters.
U-S Attorney Ruth Plagenhoef concedes that makes Neely's case "very timely," but she points out the two cases are unrelated.

Local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty are being honored for their sacrifice.

Roanoke Valley Regional Law Enforcement Agencies today held a memorial service to remember the 27-fallen officers and honor their families. The Salem service included words from Delegate Morgan Griffith and a roll call of the officer's names. Representatives from the participating agencies placed flowers in a wreath in the name of each fallen officer. Today's ceremony was the third of its kind in the Roanoke Valley.

Capitol Police say Joseph Weaver and his wife suffered only minor cuts and bruises when he crashed his car into the Virginia General Assembly building last night.
Police say Weaver suffered some sort of seizure.
He lost control and smashed his car through a window of Senate Room B.
The car caught fire.
But a quick-thinking Capitol Police officer put it out.
The crash came within a few feet of Botetourt Senator Bo Trumbo's empty chair on the Senate Finance Committee.
Damage is estimated at about 10-thousand dollars.

But a committee shot down Nancy McCord's top priority, legislation that would give property owners the ability to recover attorneys fees if they challenge an offer and prevail in court.

The Roanoke County Supervisors haven't taken a position on eminent domain reform, but county attorney Paul Mahoney says in his experience the current system has worked well, with few cases ending up in court.

The sale of Robert E. Lee's boyhood home will go through.
Attorney General Mark Earley will not block the sale to a couple who plan to use it as a private residence.
The Alexandria home had been a museum but fell into disrepair.
In March 2000, the Lee-Jackson Foundation sold the home for 2-and-a-half million dollars to the couple, who plan to restore it and live there.

Brown met Hunt Ozmer and his daughter Hunter at a restaurant in Maryland.
